Description
0400 hours, Tuesday, August 12, 1942… BATTLE STATIONS! BATTLE STATIONS! Enemy convoy identified on radar!

The world is deep at war, and you're submerged among the enemy. Prepare to dive into Silent Service, the submarine simulation that recreates authentic World War II sea patrols in the bloody waters of the South Pacific.

From the second you take command, you'll live by the motto FIND 'EM, CHASE 'EM, SINK 'EM, as you follow instruments, charts and your instincts in search of hostile convoys. Is a submerged daylight periscope attack best or do you charge in on the surface at night using only radar bearings to guide you? Do you fire a spread of your precious torpedoes or can you close the range and pick off the enemy with a single torpedo shot? These decisions and many more are yours to make as you take your place among the elite ranks of the Silent Service!
  • Includes Silent Service and its sequel Silent Service II.
  • Challenging combat versus single ships and heavily escorted convoys.
  • All the critical battle stations: engine room, conning tower and ship’s bridge.
  • An infinite variety of situations using complete maps and charts for the entire Southwest Pacific.
  • A wide selection of historical scenarios from individual attacks to patrol missions.

Classics!

As WestCell mentioned, this is why I love GOG - where else can you find classic such as these! While the graphics are old school, the games are a ton of fun. I have always loved sub games and these two were among the best. Both are very easy to play and the second is jsut more of the same, but better. I spent a lot of hours with these two and others on various platforms. Nice thing is these should be playable on anything that boots up, and their small size means they make a great "fun timekiller for when I'm bored" to keep on any laptop. Not hyper realistic, the emphasis is on fun. You do get a feel for the submariner life, though, as stealth is a big part of the game. There's a lot of fun to be had, so dive, dive, dive!

A childhood memory is back

I remember playing the original Silent Service I on my father's Atari when I was a kid. It was on that game that I learned what bearing and heading were. A few years later when my father upgraded to a Windows PC, SS II was the first game he bought, and we both played hours on it. Needless to say, I was excited when I saw both SS titles were available here. The games bring a blend of arcade gameplay with simulation. It's not as realistic as the Silent Hunter series... in SS the game automatically computes a firing solution for the torpedoes. But, it comes from the genius known as Sid Meier... need I say more?

The Reason I first started coming to GOG

My fondest moments with the old Atari 800 was playing this game. Home from work at midnight, and when I sank the last ship the the sun coming up in the game was so intense until I realized it was the Real sun. :)

Apple IIGS players will be disappointed

I never owned Silent Service I back when I was a kid, but I knew two people who did, one with the Apple IIGS version and one with the Apple IIe version. Compared to the Apple IIGS version, this PC version is terrible. The sound and graphics aren't so great, and it isn't as responsive and the gameplay is not as intuitive. The IIGS version used a mouse as well as keyboard. I'm probably just spoiled by having played the IIGS version at a friend's house. It's like playing the remake. The Apple IIe version is only marginally better than the DOS version, but it's still better. On the other hand, it's bundled with Silent Service II, and that one is acceptable. I never got to play Silent Service II back in the day as I owned an Apple IIGS and they never released a IIGS version, then my parents got me a Mac. It's as good or better than the IIGS version of Silent Service I.

Unplayable

I have a lot of memories of watching my brother play this game. Too bad it's unplayable as far as I can tell. Controls, even with the overlay, do not work and there is no way to really do much in the game, which sucks because I was excited to play it.
