One of the best oldies out there, but...
...nostalgia plays indeed a major role. This game was so great despite its obvious limits. Let me say that the biggest flaw is the scarce AI of the opponents (three that sonn will be two after an ingame event). If you are an experimented player you will find yourself toying with the AI opponents. That said, the game is great for a gentle, nice playing experience, not as time consuming as the Civ games. I have been playing this game almost since it came out and it still gives me good times. A lot of exploring, many Indian tribes, trade, lot of buildings, founding fathers that will provide bonus or traits, military units (mounted or not) that can be promoted like this: petty criminal-indentured servant-free colonist-veteran, missionaries intriguing with indians or just doing gods work and a king taxing you more and more, ultimately pushing the player into the ultimate goal: independence. And that is not as easy as toyng with your fellow europeans. Also, a rating sistem of your performance rather interesting considering the time: score plus something your name is given to, might be a serpent, a continent,... The sistem goes if I recall correctly from my younger days until 200% score: getting there IS a challenge. I dare you.

A Gem That Stood the Test of Time
As many people mentioned here; the game requires multi-level thinking. It also has incredible atmosphere. I might be biased (though not a die-hard maniac of old games), but it aged well - even drum-and-pie miliary tunes sound better in this ancient version... I also played the remaster, which, apart from graphics, is worse in every aspect; especially AI. The only reproach against Colonization is that starts can ne uneven; sometimes you have a very small chance to survive whatever you do, sometimes it gets incredibly lucky and you snowball... An experienced player can recognise an overly (un)lucky game and start a new one to get a properly thrilling experience. Otherwise, it's a real treat.

Epic
As in the title- a timeless classic. The only thing that should be changed is the highest difficulty scalling (my personal opinion) and maybe penalty at higher difficulties. The reason is it plain and simple derives you from sim builder's fun= the best tactic is to keep majority cities low developed. Otherwise- a pinnacle of gaming.

Fun Strategy Game
Sid Meier's Colonization is a very fun turn based strategy game from approx 1995. Though the graphics are old and pixellated, the gameplay and interface is really good. It's all about building an empire in the new world by producing goods, selling the goods, and getting the resources to eventually fight the war for independence. Highly recommend this game!
