It's the Running Man as a XCOM-style tactics game. On the easy side, and without the strategy layer, but still fun, and with some enjoyable exploration sections. to break up the combat Not breaking new ground, but delivers what it needs to.
I really enjoyed this one a whole lot. I didn't really experience many bugs throughout, though I did have 2 crashes towards the end. 1 during a combat scenario in the DLC and 1 during the final battle. I don't see a lot of immediate replay opportunity with this title though, which is unfortunate because I really liked the vibes this one was putting out. I'd be down for a sequel!
If they were to do a sequel something I'd like to see is a different approach to weapon upgrades, greater variety in the skill trees within their respective class, opportunity for different companions while exploring, and less linear game progression. I think this game was excellent for what it was, but if a sequel were attempted I think embracing these additional elements would allow for greater replayability.
This game’s been one of the most fun tactical experiences I’ve had in a while.
The combat feels great. Every hit and kill is satisfying, and the clean, responsive UI really helps sell the strategy immersion. That stuff makes or breaks turn-based tactics, and here it’s easily a 5 out of 5.
Weapon progression is mostly straightforward: you upgrade to things that hit harder. It’s linear for the most part, with some variation for armor-tied weapons. It’s simple, but sometimes simplicity just works; and in this case, it does.
The RPG elements are thankfully light. No fake branching dialogue paths or forced emotional beats. I appreciate that it didn’t go full Midnight Suns with endless “talk to everyone at the base” downtime. That game felt like a dating sim you had to suffer through to get to the good fights. That said, I still don’t need the “go to bed and press A to sleep” moments. Completely pointless filler.
Puzzles were sparse but solid. They actually complemented the pacing rather than slowing it down or feeling tacked on.
Visually, I love the gritty dystopian and cyberpunk aesthetic, and the soundtrack nailed the vibe. It all came together really well.
Diving into the DLC next. Looking forward to seeing how it builds on this.
