One-dimensional Chess?

Despite the buzzwords in the blurb, this is really nothing like a roguelike or a deckbuilder. I'm not sure I can think of anything quite like it, but I find that it tickles some of the same synapses as Chess: gameplay is turn-based, and you'll need to plan a few moves ahead and calculate enemy positions and attacks in advance when choosing your next action. Each stage is a one-dimensional combat arena and dives straight into the action. The aesthetic is sharp, the gameplay is addictive, and it doesn't make the mistake of weighing itself down with any unnecessary filler or pointless storyline clichés. The difficulty curve feels very good too: gently challenging, but with gradually increasing complexity and harder conditions unlocked as you play. Bosses have well thought-out attack patterns and don't add annoying bottlenecks to progression. There's still plenty of space for more content at time of writing, but already plenty of variety, with different combinations of character abilities, items and upgrades producing interesting new synergies in each run. Easily one of the best new games I've played for a while. 🙂

Great little game

Shogun showdown takes simple mechanics and creates interesting gameplay. It's a really solid little strategy/puzzle game.

Into the Breach, minus one dimension

Yes, this is yet another rogue-lite. The game consists of a series of semi-randomly generated fights, and if you die, you have to start over. A successful run lasts about 45 minutes once you got some practice, but in the beginning it took me more like 2 hours. Fights take place on one-dimensional stages, between 5 and 13 (I think, never actually counted them) tiles wide. Your lone character always starts in the center, usually surrounded. Enemy intents are known and you do your best to dodge while killing them and occasionally make them do the killing for you. All of this happens turn-based, zero reflexes required. Pulling of a good turn has the potential to make you feel smarter than you are, which can be pretty satisfying. The game is currently still in development, which in this case just means new stuff gets added every few months. I can't remember encountering any bugs. The controls may feel confusing for about 5 minutes, but become intuitive quickly. It does get somewhat old after 100-200 hours or so, but what kind of critisism is that?

Very good game, mostly skill based

I've enjoyed this game a lot. It's rare a game get 5-stars from me. But this one deserves it. The gameloop is simple but not easy. In fact, 95% of times there is a solution for your problem, and 4.9% of times you can see the problem one turn before it appears. There is just a 0.01% of times where it get you. I've been hitted a lot, and I missed a lot of games, all of them my mistake except one that was an unfortunate accident. This game is skill based, and almost zero luck based. It's really well designed. Comparing this to the king, Slay the Spire, Shogun Shodown is easier simply because it's better balanced. All the cards are useful and it's up to you to create a good strategy with what you has. I have invested 105 hours in this game, and I have now all the achievements. But I'll continue playing, it has become one of my "go to" games. It's really rewarding when you have a good idea to avoid enemy attack and they kill themselves. Oh... and the MUSIC is GOOD. I'm thinking in the music of the last boss of the day 7. I love it, but the other songs are awesome too. Linux + Controller support. Good work!
