Aquila non capit muscas

Aquila non capit muscas: the eagle does not catch flies; yet that is all that you do in this game. Is Sherlock really the "Great Detective", or the lackey of all the rabble in London? Early in the game, you need to charm a Jewish cobbler, so that he can make some harnesses for you, which harnesses you give to a doctor, so that you can take a stolen cane left in his clinic, which cane you give to the operator of a brothel, so she can spill some information on a suspect--ridiculous! There isn't a Conan Doyle story on a planet in which Holmes or Watson have to bother with such roundabout trifles. Many of the puzzles are terrible (suffering from "moon logic"), such as the puzzles in the hospital. The first part of the puzzle was easy enough; but how are you supposed to guess what to do next? Meanwhile, when you're finished (probably after looking up a guide) you're left wondering what any of these objects you found (which Watson had no reason to look for) have anything to do with Jack the Ripper. This game has nothing going for it except for Holmes and Watson, and some--some--of the aesthetic choices. All the other characters are forgettable, and the game is such a bore; a tedious bore.

Can't get the game running

Neither the Steam version I own, nor this version are working. Yes I did install PhysX (restarts of my PC inculded), copied the PhysXLoader64.dll over, I tried different versions of compatibility mode, start as administrator, check on DirectX, start from the folder directly etc. The only difference between both versions is, that the GOG game gives me a start picture, while I get nothing at all on the Steam version. This is the first game on GOG that I can't run. Too buggy, not worth your time.

Frogwares games can be charmingly janky but when I have to go under the hood and mess around because by default the game doesn't let you *save* then something has gone really wrong.
