Description

Sherlock Holmes Chapter One Deluxe Edition includes a Season Pass with new quests:

  • 'Saints and Sinners' DLC
  • 'Mycroft's Pride' DLC
  • 'M for Mystery' DLC
  • 'Beyond A Joke' DLC

    • In this story-driven detective thriller, a young Sherlock Holmes struggles to prove himself as he navigates an exotic, dangerous island in the Mediterranean to investigate the mystery of his mother's death.

Before he was the world's greatest detective, Sherlock Holmes was a brilliant rebel itching to prove himself. When an old wound compels him back to the Mediterranean shore where his mother died, it seems like the perfect opportunity to do just that—but beneath the vibrant urban veneer of Cordona, the rhythm of island life strikes a more ominous beat. Crime and corruption, a twisted sense of justice and morality.. These are just a few stumbling-blocks in Sherlock's quest for truth.

Not entirely bad, but still disappointed

I love the original Sherlock Holmes stories, some movies, the TV show with Jeremy Brett and most of the games by Frogwares. Still i can't decide whether i like this game or not. The core case solving mechanics are very similar to previous games. You gather information by talking to people or examining crime scenes and have to combine all that knowledge to find out what happened and who's the culprit. The game respects my intelligence. That's very rare in story focussed video games these days and i love that. But on the other hand there is a lot of weird stuff in this game. For example a nicely designed, but very static open world. It looks good, but the only thing it adds to the game is more walking around. You can use fast travel, but using that makes the open world completely obsolete. Some outfits are more steampunk/fantasy, than authentic. And then there are a lot of small side tasks like treasure hunts etc. that feel like they come directly from a Ubisoft open world playground. It's fun for an hour, but then it gets very repetitive. And the worst part: Combat! Why?? It's one of the worst and weirdest features i've ever seen in a game. You enter an arena and fight against around 5 to 10 gangsters with your pistol, but you can't shoot someone in the chest or head because they wear metal armor on their arms?? That's just weird. Feels like the game was already finished and somebody said "You know what? Let's add some combat." It doesn't work at all and it's terribly executed. The main story was nice, but it didn't feel like a Sherlock Holmes case. I wish the devs would go back to Jack the Ripper, Testament or Crimes & Punishments, take a good look at them and make a new game based on those. For me, even though it wasn't entirely bad, Chapter One was one of the weakest Sherlock Holmes titles. Too much focus on a much too static open world, too little focus on good stories, characters and authenticity based on the original stories from Arthur Conan Doyle.

Disappointed

Games is not bad. But it is not Sherlock Holmes games any more. It's more like Assasin Creed than previous games about Sherlock Holmes from Frogware studio. You have to run and fight instead of think and analyse. I haven't expected it and I don't like it. If you expected sth like Crimes and Punishments you are wrong.

You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive

As an avid Sir Arthur Conan Doyle reader I must say that playing this game was a delightful, though rather short, experience. The guys from Frogwares kept strictly to the books, portraying the protagonist to the letter as how Sir Doyle wanted him and, delving into areas not written by the author, it is my humble opinion that they performed admirably. You will control a young Sherlock, not yet cut out to be the hard boiled investigator we all know and love, but a fragile youngster barely showing the signs and attitude of the man he is to become, investigating the death of his mother 10 years later on the island where his family moved after the passing of his father. As a treat to readers like myself the story ends with the starting scene from A Study in Scarlet where Sherlock meets John Watson for the first time. The cases are intriguing, the running around the map to search for clues might be tremendous, but the outcome, when you solve the case, is definitely satisfying. As for the technicalities, there are a few things that are to be desired. For one, myself playing on a high-end computer on Ultra settings, one could clearly see how they tuned the Unreal engine to be playable on low-end computers - the NPCs in the distance skip frames - they literally jump places, the mirrors are not reflecting accurately but rather distorting, the lipsync (with English voice act) is worse than Assassin's Creed Valhalla. The game simply seems hurried for release. I hope those will be fixed in future updates, for they genuinely spoil the experience. Hence the missing 5th star in my rating. And for second, the game is really short - no more than 12-15 hours of gameplay when one mainly follows the main quests. Although, as I said, the cases are really intriguing, fascinating even. Overall, I would recommend this game. One can lean back and enjoy the story with their feet up and live through the youth of Sherlock Holmes with pleasure!

EXCELLENT (minus combat)

Another very promising Sherlock Holmes (I did not finish it yet). Fist of all I must mention that it runs on Windows 7 with all settings on highest, provided you have a decent machine. I haven't encountered any glitches so far. Second it is a massive open concept game with many side cases to solve, so I am looking forward to many playing hours. Frogwares has the talent to create an atmosphere and this game is not an exception - you get one to remember. The only objection is the combat. There are two options to choose from - investigation and combat. I hoped that if I choose investigation that I won't get any combats but I was so wrong. There is still too much combat to my taste and all those that I encountered so far look like the training in the police station and out of place (tugs wearing armour !!!, sacks of flour in the boat house !!! etc.) And while killing monsters was completely incorporated into' The Sinking City''s game story and fun to do, it feels unnatural, weird, and unnecessary in this game. NOTE: I will update my review when I finish the game. It is still early days but I wanted to encourage those that are still not sure whether to buy this game or not. I absolutely recommend it.

Rewards you if you get into it

I have played recent Sherlock Holmes games by Frogwares. Thise one and Crimes and Punishments, are my favorites although both games are quite differnet in some respects. With this game the developers had quite a bit of courage and I commend them for that. Opinions may differ but for me they got a lot right with the new things they tried There is a combination of a main story which and additional side cases. The main story is also broken up in various parts. This makes it easy to focus on the case at hand and prevents becoming overwhelmed after putting the game away until the next day or a few days. One thing that could have helped is a bit more in-game introduction of the game mechanics. The game itself won't always point out how things work but there are very helpful explanations in one section of the settings menu. I very much recommend that you read them. It really pays off to understand these game mechanics early during the game! This is a bit of an "investment" and may feel a bit dry but you will be rewarded if you understand clearly how things work. I promise! The story is really well told in my opinion and moved me quite a bit. Sometimes the choices you have are not perfect but in the end it is great story telling and the conclusion of felt very appropriate and rewarding. The overall thrust of the story and how it is told are great and this is what matters to me in the end. The DLC cases and side cases are also a great addition. There were a few cases where the conclusions felt a bit too arbitrary because multiple alternative solutions seemed equally plausible. But the side make a fantastic addition and add a lot to the game and often add a lot of what made Crimes and Punishments so good. So I really recommend also getting the DLCs. The combat system is weird but it grew on me a lot and in fact I ended up enjoying it quite a bit after mastering it. Here again it pays off to read how the game mechanics work. Overall a great. Recommended!
