As Sherlock, your legacy is written by the decisions you make in this open world detective adventure. Deception, violence, and deduction are just a few resources in your arsenal—your mysterious companion and sounding board, Jon, is another.
Whether you choose brute force to solve problems or stay one step ahead of your enemies by using your wits to spot vulnerabilities, you decide what each situation demands as you hone your investigative skills. It’s time to confront your past so you can become the legend you’re destined to be.
KEY PILLARS
The Man Before: As a cavalier young Sherlock on the precipice of adulthood, you’ll earn your reputation in a way no game or story has explored before. We’ve never seen the youthful arrogance and naiveté of the man before the legend—now you’re living it.
Global Investigation: You never know where your next clue will come from. Explore and exploit the entire city in your pursuit of truth, using clues, rumors, disguises, tags, and pinned evidence to build a solid case within your mind palace.
And Stay Down: Weapons might help you in a pinch, but there’s something to be said for style—and you have it in spades. Spot enemy vulnerabilities with your brilliant observation skills, or exploit the environment to take someone down while keeping your own hands clean.
A Different Jon: Before John Watson, there was a different Jon - your best and only friend. But who is he, really?
A Darkening Tide: Set in the 19th century, the vibrant island in the Mediterranean promises anything but paradise. Political corruption and crime run rampant while the islanders cling to tradition and eschew outsiders, making your job even more difficult.
Truth and Lies: There are two sides to every story, and the proud islanders have their own ideas about truth and justice. It’s up to you to decide whether uncovering the truth will do more harm than good—and how that will shape the man you’ll become.
I played most of the Sherlock Holmes games that have been released. Loved Crimes and Punishments by the same developer.
This part didn't capture me though. The graphics feel very outdated in 2023, and are even somewhat sluggish running on my nvidia rtx 3060. But it is not just the graphics, the athmosphere, the music, the voice acting, nothing really works for me in this installment.
German audio is missing, which is a shame because it was incredibly good in some of the previous parts.
If you feel you must have this game, I recommend to wait until it is on sale.
Besides Holmes looking ridiculous in his "fancy" clothes and beeing called "Sherry" all the time (every time a pain to hear), there is a lot of useless, mediocre looking environment only to run through to no avail, a bunch of non-informative icons in the notes with no order in it, a clumsy "chemistry-system", uninspired answers from people who have "nothing to say" (I wish they really wouldn´t) while Holmes is locked in place and has to listen, and worst of all, there is "combat".
I have played Tomb Raider, I`ve played Alpha Protocol, I`ve played the Witcher, I`ve played Deus Ex - I just don`t get it what to do to arrest someone in this game. There is a circle with a line, a get a hint what key to press, I press the key - and get hit ... and that`s it.
I shot the first guy in the police training ten times to be able to try again and now I`m done with it.
May be the main case is good, I don´t know. The mindmap is basically telling you what´s wrong and what`s right, so you don`t have to think there either.
What did they think when they made this?! What was wrong with the controls in Crime&Punishment?
Whenever the imaginary friend complains about beeing bored, I can relate from all my heart.
Sadly this is much more effort than it`s worth.
Just got this on GOG, but I've been mostly playing on my Xbox.
A major critique I've had about The Sinking City was how little the Open World had to do with the core investigation gameplay loop. Often, Investigations required using the in-game map to locate the approximate location of the next investigation site and trekking there. In The Sinking City, this was a problem as it tended to break up the flow of the investigation with tedious navigation in a static world filled with lifeless wandering NPCs. (Just to be clear, the art direction and world itself were very well done, but the gameplay didn't fully justify the Open World format which was my major gripe)
This game solves this issue by actually injecting some life and purpose into the open world format by introducing a new mechanic that allows the player to interrogate the NPCs in the world to learn new information regarding the case. While there is still a longer way to go to fully justify the Open World format in this game series, this game does a decent job of integrating the open world into the investigation gameplay loop while also experimenting with new and unique combat mechanics that asks the player to do more than just aim and shoot.
In short, this is a very good game.
At first, I hardly even wanted to start the game as I noticed that it doesn't include first person view while I played all the previous games that way. But it was a very good decision that I still tried it because it gave me an awesome experience. The game as a point & click game seems to be very fresh in its mechanics, I played Crimes and Punishments - The Devil's Daughter - The Testament of Sherlock Holmes - Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper - then this one in a row in just a few months, and I didn't get bored of it because all of them were mechanically renewed, the developers have always put some new twist which made all of them fresh compared to the older ones. (As I recall, they are Ukrainians... I wish them the best from Hungary.)
MINOR SPOILERS:
As a gay autist, it was also a very personal experince for me, especially that I didn't even know anything about the game before I started it. I can understand that it is not everyone's thing, and some people will be like "this LGBTQ stuff again", but the angle of this game meant very much to me, I mean it. Such topic in art prior to these years often excluded topics such as this, as if LGBTQ people didn't even exist. There were many other minorities like this in history. And the game doesn't even state anything about Holmes's sexuality, there are only hints about it, just like about his autism. For those who don't like it (because why would everyone like it, I too don't like every renewal I see in art), I advise to only focus on the game mechanics and the aspects they can identify with, and don't accept the other aspects as canon. This way, they too can get a very good experience.
The story is good, I liked it and I feel like it fits with the canon in harmony, but that's about when it ends with things that are done flawlessly
Voice acting and music are also good but hit and miss sometimes.
Combat is bad and honestly I don't know why it's even in the game I skipped all of it, which is nice that they let you do so.
There are some performance issues but nothing too serious and not letting you see if you did the right or wrong choice is something that should've never made it past first conceptions. While we're on that, most of the detective work was too easy and the higher difficulty mode only made gameplay annoying, not harder. 70% of the time I could see who done it before I even collected half of the evidence.
To sum it up for every right thingt his game does, it does something bad, it suffers from its ambitious reach and I hope the developers won't be put downn if this entry wasn't as succesful as they would hope, I think they can make great sherlock games if they take it easier.
