Do you plan your route to reach the stack of boxes shielding you from the two rat snipers on overwatch? Or do you take the sole fusion core in your possession and hurl it at your enemies? You go with the latter and watch core’s powerful charge annihilate enemies that were blocking the way to a door. It’s a door that sadly won't budge. The door needed a fusion core inserted in its ever-hungry socket, the same item that you exploded to defeat your rodent foes.

STORY

There has been an unexpected breakthrough during the long and exhausting siege of The Empire's Capital. The Rat Swarm managed to breach the walls and flood the city with vermin. You control a group of surviving city-dwellers who are trying to escape and rescue as many others as they can. They will need to scavenge the destroyed city for resources, fight off rat vermin, and escape safely from the city.

You will need to use every single tool at your disposal: every scrap of metal, fusion core, weapon upgrade, and medical supply to tend to the inevitable injuries. Push through three districts with progressively more vicious enemies, rising emergency levels, and supplies that dry up like blood from a decaying knife wound. Constantly on the move, you’ll search bodies and lockers only to realize that each detour means the Rat Swarm reinforcements are getting closer. The only respite is locked behind bunker doors that can only be opened with the most precious of all finds: the all-powerful fusion core.

CHOOSE YOUR MISFORTUNE

How will you deploy your fusion cores? You could use it as a super-powerful explosive to get rid of a five-rat-strong pack, but then you’ll lose the means to open a bunker door that will allow you to tend to injuries and fix up weapons.

BLOW OFF SOME STEAM

All the guns in Shardpunk are energy-based, and once you get a specific number of shots in, you’ll need to cool it off. However, you can test your luck and attempt a fifth shot on that four-shot cannon. But if it backfires or overcharges, you’ll have to hope that there's still one turn left before that rat sniper gets his bearings.

BUNKER DILEMMAS

The hiss of the heavy bunker door locking down behind you is only a part of the deal. It's never a matter of “is anyone hurt?” but rather “whose injuries require the most attention?” You’ll rarely be able to heal everyone and save some med kits for later. Who can keep fighting despite their wounds?

DO YOU SPLIT?

Should you keep all your troops moving at the same pace to find and reach the bunker door in one piece, or split the crew into groups and cover twice as much ground? You can scavenge more loot with the latter strategy, but you’ll risk your smaller squads getting cornered and wiped out by an enemy swarm.

DRAFT A MOTLEY CREW

Shardpunk gives you loads of flexibility in putting together your crew of survivors. For example, you could go with the dependant Mycroft with his exoskeleton, powerful ground slam, and heavy cannon that holds more limited charges, or you could take your chance with Silas, a twice-shooting jerk. Sure, he hates everyone, but has a chance to blast two rats in a round.

PICK YOUR TREE TO CLIMB

Get a few kills in, pick up that experience, and reach a temporary zone to upgrade your skills. Should you invest in a larger area for the katana-wielding close combat, or put your skills in the shotgun spread? It’s yet another choice that will impact your experience.

If XCOM and FTL had a baby...

I was intrigued by Shardpunk's promise to combine XCOM turn-based combat with permadeath mechanics of roguelite and I am pleased that it had delivered a solid experience. It is fun, fast-paced and doesn't take itself too seriously. Also noteworthy that it was built by a single Polish developer over 5 years. Shardpunk's pixel art graphics are charming and well-executed. Sound effects are serviceable. The music, while somewhat repetitive, does a great job of setting the mood and immersing you in the game's world. It's clear that a lot of love and attention to detail went into the creation of this game, and it shines through in every aspect. I did find the gameplay a bit too easy on normal difficulty, as certain mechanics can be exploited to breeze through levels. For XCOM veterans I would recommend playing on a high difficulty. In summary, I thoroughly enjoyed it so far (currently in chapter 2) and it deserves 5 stars. Would recommend to anyone looking for a good turn-based strategy experience. Support indie devs.

Delightful treat

I'm very impressed; it's the full package: Clean pixel graphics that convey meaning and gameplay details, solid controller support, helpful tutorial that teaches all you need, easy to use codex for all details and to review past hints, nice world and interesting story that doesn't get in the way, really cool character paths and builds (ninja shotgunner FTW!), challenging for a newbie but not frustrating on normal, interesting map layouts with worldbulding details, clear combat system that's not annoying. I'm someone who enjoyed XCOM but got a bit overwhelmed with all the basebuilding and the missions taking too long. This game though: you can save and quit to desktop anytime, and it's easy to come back whenever you do.

Hopefully developers will read this

Game is really great, I accidentally found it and bought after seeing promising reviews. Totally worth it and I recomend it too all fans of XCOM like genre. I have just 2 request that will improve QoL in the game: 1) implementation of mute button- right now, when I want to listen podcast and play, I need to click several times to set volume of voice and music and do this again to undo. Implementation of mute buttopn in settings would be great. 2) implementation of "undo last move" button- several times I made mnistake and moved wrong character. Right making this mistake is pernament and there is no option to correct it. It would be great to introduce this functionality like to have at least limmited number of uses per battle (i.e. 1 or 2) to allow players reversing misclick, but not to abuse the game by scauting and having advantge of that information. Lastly, please invest in marketing, becasue this game deserves to be known to broader audience.

Strong retro-aesthetics & tactics!

"Shardpunk" reminds me on one of my most-loved indie-tactics games, namely "Depth of Extinction". "Shardpunks" retro aesthetics, XCOM-like movement, overwatch modes, and skills, combined with weapon upgrades that change the game significantly, are what makes it highly enjoyable. As with "Depth", this game also has a hard difficulty, and I highly recommend playing it in permadeath mode, as it makes the combats more thrilling. You'll do everything to keep your characters from getting lost forever. Although I highly enjoy "Shardpunk", I totally look forward to DLCs that add a bit of variety to the enemies, being them all rats of the same type. Also, the environment is a bit repetitive. That doesn't reduce fun with the game for me, also considering that the game has a fair pricing, making it worth every Euro spent. It only makes me curious about new DLCs coming to the great "Shardpunk"-adventure!

Wears out its welcome too soon

After playing a dozen or so levels, I think the micro-managing of every character, every round, wears thin. I like that it's a tense experience and every move matters. However, I never found upgrades particularly satisfying to hold my interest to keep having more or less the same experience during every level. Grinding out unlocks isn't enough justification to keep playing the game for me, in the hope that it gets better with one of the other characters (e.g. sunk cost mentality). Also, a few bugs, like enemies shooting me through a solid cavern wall, were incredibly immersion breaking when they sneaked in. This is a commendable first effort for a development studio, even though I'm nonplussed about it.
