Description
The year is 2054. Magic has returned to the world, awakening powerful creatures of myth and legend. Technology merges with flesh and consciousness. Elves, trolls, orks and dwarves walk among us, while ruthless corporations bleed the world dry. You are a shadowrunner - a mercenary living on the fringes of society, in the shadows of massive corporate arcologies, surviving day-by-day on skill and instinct alone. When the powerful or the desperate need a job done, you get it done... by any means necessary.

In the urban sprawl of the Seattle metroplex, the search for a mysterious killer sets you on a trail that leads from the darkest slums to the city’s most powerful megacorps. You will need to tread carefully, enlist the aid of other runners, and master powerful forces of technology and magic in order to emerge from the shadows of Seattle unscathed.

The unique cyberpunk-meets-fantasy world of Shadowrun has gained a huge cult following since its creation nearly 25 years ago. Now, creator Jordan Weisman returns to the world of Shadowrun, modernizing this classic game setting as a single player, turn-based tactical RPG.
  • Powerful Content Creation: With the Shadowrun Returns Editor, everyone is empowered to create and share their own stories and campaigns with the Shadowrun community. You can even explore the entire Shadowrun Returns Seattle campaign in the Editor directly - see how it was built and borrow as much as you need to jump-start your own creations! No advanced coding or art skills are required to create content using the SRR Editor.
  • Gripping Tactical Combat: When you’re running the shadows, every turn matters. Choose your actions wisely - move to better cover, charge into melee, or lob a fireball into a crowd of enemies. With the variety of weapons and spells at your disposal, every turn is filled with meaningful choices. A successful run requires commanding a team of runners with the right balance of combat, tech, and magical abilities.
  • Skill-Based Character Progression: Choose a starting character archetype and build from there! Street Samurai and Physical Adepts use advanced combat skills to dominate the battlefield, Shamans and Mages summon powerful allies and cast deadly spells, while Riggers and Deckers provide critical technological support, projecting their consciousness directly into drones and computer systems. Shadowrun Returns’ classless skill system allows you to grow your character in any direction you choose. Want to start summoning spirits as an ork Shaman and evolve into a cybered-up weapon specialist? Do it!
  • Engaging 2D/3D Art Style: Shadowrun Returns mixes dynamic 3D characters and lighting with a vibrant, hand-painted environment. Illustrated character portraits bring every conversation to life. Explore a world filled with detail, from the slums of the Redmond Barrens to the extravagant offices of powerful corporations.

Game breaking bug left in 6 years later.

I really enjoyed this game, or at least, what I got to play. If you have a rigger or are a rigger and reach a certain part of the game it will break and you can't proceed. You have to go back and get rid of all riggers on your team and all bots you have in order for it not to break. If you don't, either UI will become unresponsive, or your controls will become unresponsive, or both. This has been an issue reported on the Steam Discussions board by multiple people (Bug at Universal Brotherhood by Chromeo). Harebrained IS aware of the issue and has not fixed it. It's been six years. It's sad because otherwise this game is actually really good, but this ruined my experience. If you do get this, please keep this in mind so your time with this game is untainted!

A Kickstarter King!

People who backed the game on kickstarter knew exactly what this game was going to be like and how it would play. These were the hardcore Shadowrun fans. Some of whom played the original pen and paper edition (y'know "real" RPG games) and I have to say that this is an excellent version and well worth the money. It ticks all the right boxes. Some have aimed the most pointless criticisms at it which I can only describe as a misunderstanding by these people as to what this game is. 1. Too linear? Nothing wrong with that. It is really the intro sample story for the game, after all. A story to get the player into the world of Shadowrun. The real cool stuff should come from those players who GM it and create their own stories to share with others. That's when the fun will really begin. 2. Poor graphics and no voice acting? You're joking right? There's nothing wrong with the graphics of this game. You don't need flashy AAA graphics to make a decent game and the lack of sound only helps those that want to GM their own campaign. 3. Inability to save at will? Saving a game wherever you like tends to destroy the gameplay of many a decent game, in my opinion. I find the savepoint system a welcome challenge, although they are usually loathed by the carebear player.

Best Shadowrun game to date.

I've played the Shadowrun games on both the Super NES and Genesis Game systems. I liked the Genesis version better all around. I also played the Japanese Sega CD Shadowrun game(briefly). I've also read most of the books also. I waited to buy the game until there was a save state system in place in it. Now there is and it works wonderfully. The game's interface and X-COM style battles remind me of the Super NES game's point and click interface. Shadowrun Returns follows the storyline from the books the closest of the Shadowrun games that have been released so far. It is fun to play and see the story unfold. The game is very linear, however for purposes of introducing the game with a coherent introductory storyline, it was necessary. Other games like Walking Dead do the same thing. I noticed at the end of the game the concept of multiple choice in dialogue is used to much greater effect. The developers obviously intended the ending to be open ended, with many dangling threads of location and plot to encourage modding of the game. Allowing the game to be mod-able was a good decision on the developers part. Games I buy now have to allow some kind of modding and be DRM free. For the small budget that this game had it is very good. Fans of the books or pen and paper RPG will appreciate how well it ties into those. Furthermore this is the only Shadowrun to date, not to force the player to be a human.

Excellent game! Very enjoyable.

While it's true that the game is fairly linear, you can develop your character as you wish - this is very much a game for a role-player. Your decisions do not have long-term ramifications, but they are plentiful and often remembered by NPCs. This isn't a game with masterful graphics, but the atmosphere is nonetheless pleasant and interesting. The story is excellent and has incredible depth in pre-existing literature for those who'd like to learn more about the game world. I look forward to the next instalment!

Too Linear, and the game holds your hand through the RPG sections. Basically just run and gun game
