Hybrid child of Doom meets Crusader: No Remorse/Regret

What? You play a military mechanic on the recently terraformed moon Ganymede of the planet Jupiter. One days things start to go wrong and you are to assist in the investigation of the strange happenings. Seems the water has been contaminated by strange lifeforms that endanger the colony. Before you know it you search for survivors, battle aliens, assist a planetary exodus, help a crashed spaceship, fix an UFO and visit an enormous alien mothership with it. The good? - some kind of an isometric "Doom" version, "Crusader: No regret/remorse" type - a decent enough story & situations that make actual sense - acceptable graphics & overall good lightning effects - well worked out level design & presentation of Ganymede base, mines & spaceships - some very nice pieces of music & sound effects - challenging & stealthy combat - 11 chapters - 5 lives per chapter - a good variety of weapons & useful upgrades - various monsters & aliens with different powers/weapons & weaknesses - good monster AI - responsive controls - some fun resemblances with SF movie iconic requisites The Bad? - save games only at start of each chapter, no saves whatsoever in between chapters - long duration per chapter (> 2 hours) - so check the time when starting a chapter, because it's till the bitter end of the chapter or a restart next time ... - you have to restart the whole chapter when you die 5 times, so take care! - some minor bugs (I got firmly stuck in a forcefield when I was slowly approaching a main generator with 3 forcefield generators -> to avoid a chapter restart I had to blow myself up with the grenade launcher & therefor sacrifice 1 life) - you run around the whole game in your base uniform, no other wearable armor & upgrades whatsoever - low interaction with the environment (no containers to open and only some windows, crates & barrels to demolish) - some protuding obstacles & companions sometimes blocking your passage/escape So? I had very much fun with it when I bought it on a sales. It has it's flaws and I had no high expectations of it, but ultimately I was drawn into it. The combination of the story, the level design, the music, the weapons & their upgrades, the monsters and the graphical presentation of it all, made it all very believable. A steal at 5,00 or less.

A better Breed of Alien

It's a top-down shooter a lot like Alien Shooter and Zombie Shooter. Personally it's better than Alien Shooter for me. The saving the frustrating to say the least, the game only saves once a level is complete and a level can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. The game itself is fairly easy, I played it on easy the first time as I just wanted to cruise through it and enjoy the giblets, however in the last three levels the difficulty curve gets ridiculous, and the final boss is just a meaningless bullet magnet. The second-to-final boss is easier the type-2 heavy enemies. The weapons feel fairly weak and there is no melee. The controls are clunky and there is practically zero key bindings, forget using a controller/gamepad as this game is unplayable using one as it has no left joystick support for some reason even though it recognises it and does not support triggers (I use a PS3 controller emulating an XBOX360 PC controller via DS3, works perfectly with Guacamelee, Don't Starve, etc). The save games are mapped to player profiles which are actually different control schemes and are named so. Graphically the name does feel 2006 but does feel a bit dated. In short; use a keyboard+mouse, no replay value, dated graphics, clunky save system, retarded controller support, fun while you play but not much more. Wait for a sale, best played in co-op.

The Chronicles of Bruno Lastmann

The Chronicles of Bruno Lastmann is best enjoyed with some friends on the same computer after a long and tedius session of getting the game to recognize the gamepad input. Any self respecting gamer should already own a copy of The Chronicles of Bruno Lastmann anyway - if you want to become one too and you desire having all the GOG benefits, paying 10$ for this gem is a bargain. You play as the shining hero Bruno Lastmann and a couple less interesting characters as they make their final stand against an alien invasion, but thanks to Bruno Lastmann's extraordinary skills at kicking alien behinds it ends up not being their last stand and they eventually have to make more stands. The only problem I have with this game is that it is being sold under this name. On the one hand it is appropriate, as the graphics engine manages to make really nice looking shadows on the ground. On the other it detracts from the greatness that is the character of Bruno Lastmann. Hint: When you play this with your friends and you get to the mission where you can choose which character to play as - make sure not everyone chooses Bruno Lastmann, he is the only character that does not have a weapon with unlimited ammunition and WILL run out of it.

Exceeds Expectations

I was expecting a game like Crimsonland or Alien Shooter. What I got was more like a classic shooter with a feel like DOOM 3. You pick up many weapons including a railgun, a minigun and a rocket launcher. All of your weapons can be upgraded with secondary firing modes and more damage output. The game throws more than enough aliens your way for you to turn into so much strawberry jam. Story-wise there is not much to say, an alien invasion attacks a human colony and Isaac Clarke... or Tyler rather, must shoot anything that can't wear a cardigan. You'll be spending a lot of time in the dark but DAMN the lighting in this game is good. While there is co-op this game weirdly doesn't have in-mission saving, I really don't see why not. But other than this it's a fun shooting game with a awesome flashlight mechanic.

A Forgotten Gem

I am so surpirsed by this game. I was expecting so little from a game this old. I liked the level deisgn. You can choose to just go for your scenario goal however, if you take time to explore and kill extra 'aliens', you get more weapon upgrade parts. There's a good number of weapons in there. It's quite addictive. You can sit down and loose track of time. I went and bought the sequel, 'Shadowlands Survivor', on the back of it. A solid 4 out of 5. Enough to get me looking at Alien Swarm.
