Modern Slop

This is one of those games I walked in wanting to love. After all I've been a fan of the franchise since I played the original on NES. But as I walk away, this feels like the personification of the more sinister side of game design made by a team who really had no interest in the franchise so much as wanted to make their own game and used Shadowgate as the vehicle. They completely disregard the previous title and the lore it established, tore down the original main character, and while Raven was not a completely unlikable character, her total struggles both in the game and as she described her life before it basically boils down to when she had to ask the Djinn about unlocking powers within her that she already had, even as she knew all about what he was scheming somehow. It feels like this is more a fan-fiction then anything else with boring gameplay to support it... In short this is a prime example of what modern trash looks like.

Unexpected game!

This seems to be the direct sequel to Shadowgate that takes place shortly after the first game. It seems to be just built on the license of the same name, because the true sequel from the original developers is called Beyond Shadowgate. That game had the same type of gameplay and sound of the original NES game, they even added chiptune music to that game, This however was very different, it's more like mediocre adventure game, missing the suspense of both the original game and Beyond Shadowgate. Something that made the OG game so special, was the technical limitations, so you had to add a bit of your own imagination to the game. This just feels flat and dull in comparison.

Tedious and uninspired

Shadowgate 2 wants you to suffer. And this principle is consistently implemented. The presentation is so terribly mediocre, boring, and clunky that it hurts. The puzzles are either unimaginative or illogical. The voice acting sounds like AI—it would have been better to do without it altogether. The same goes for the soundtrack. The fights are an unfair and, at the same time, extremely tedious chore. They are agonizingly slow, mechanically terribly simple, and artificially difficult because the design is based on the principle of “the opponent always goes first and never misses his target.” There are no block, dodge, or bonus actions of any kind. You can't even attack enemies from a distance; you have to stand right in front of them to trigger a fight and wait for the game to switch to it's sloooow turn-based mode. It then always follows the same pattern: fight starts -> enemy gets the first hit -> does damage -> player's turn -> hits back -> does damage -> repeat. The combat messages in between, seem slow and thick like tar - cannot be clicked away - cannot be altered in the menu by any means. Watch a video on YouTube to check out combat – it's awful. Free is still not cheap enough; this game will cost you your precious lifetime! Do yourself a favor – avoid this uninspired pixel disaster at all costs.
