Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
This version lags and the movement feels wrong. The other version "Shadow Warrior Complete", which is free on GOG, runs perfectly fine. Use BuildGDX to run it in widescreen with better graphics and modern controls out of the box.
Do not waste your money on Classic Redux' shameful display.
There's an issue with this version of the game where if you move your mouse slowly the game camera won't move. On top of that the X and Y axis scaling is way off. These issues makes aiming a nightmare and it affects your camera whether you turn on Y-axis aiming or not. This issue is not present in the original game and is not present in any other Build Engine game such as the Duke Nukem 3D 20th Anniversary Edition, Blood Fresh Supply, or Ion Fury.
There is a source port version of Shadow Warrior through eduke that is free, comes with the free 2 expansions, and doesn't have the mouse issue. This isn't acceptable from a company to release and then never patch when it's clearly an issue created by the developers of the Classic Redux edition.
This review concerns only source port, since all content is the same as in Shadow Warrior Classic Complete (base game plus both mission packs).
This is a solid remaster of old DOS classic. It has essential features you would expect from modern source port: mouselook, high resolution support... However, I would expect something more: maybe additional episode or optional graphical effects. For now, main difference between Classic and Redux versions is usage of either DosBox or native binaries. Comparing to cheaper Strife: Veteran Edition, which has extra sidequest and slight graphical overhaul (and not mentioning Doom with plenty of free source ports) makes Redux look like a low effort release.
Don't get me wrong: I would pick Redux over Classic any day. It is stable, easier to configure, bug-free and it also has Linux support. I just wish that it had some extra features over free Classic version to justify its price tag. Retro FPS fans should add this to their wishlist and wait for discount :)
Sure this version runs in wide screen, and sure they've fixed the looking up and down glitches of a ray casting engine (but for some reason went with billboarded sprites instead of flat, which only serves to make the enemies look awful when you do happen to look down at them!) But the biggest crime here is omitting the most important part... MULTIPLAYER!
Given that the original version is free on GOG anyway. do yourself a favour, save yourself some money, go grab the dos version, and play through the campaign in Co Op with a friend!
Shadow Warrior is an amazing game, and was a brilliant use of the build engine at the time.
Until someone comes out with a modern conversion that is actually better then the original (I'm talking high res assets and sounds), you should just stick with the original!
If you're new to the game. Get this one. A great way to play it. It's fast and looks good at the same time compared to the DOS version. Just force vsync to whatever video card control panel you have. And you got a very smooth and fluid gameplay that the old version never had.
