Serious....Fun?

I loved the old Serious Sam games. I have played countless hours of Hammerwatch with friends. What's that you say? The Hammerwatch devs is making a game which looks like Hammerwatch combined with Serious Sam?! Sign me up! The game is a top down pixel graphics twinstick shooter thingie. The graphics and somewhat controls from Hammerwatch. The large hordes of easy to deal with 1-on-1 enemies and large levels from Serious Sam. And this is somewhat my issue with the game. The game is rather mediocre in execution. The large levels and slightly spongey enemies makes the game rather tedious. Seriously making me reconsider if I actually liked Serious Sam to begin with. It is EXACTLY what a true to the series Serious Sam game would be as a twin stick shooter, and it's rather dull. Hammerwatch had variety with classes playing differently. Here of course you've got an impressive arsenal of weapons, meaning replay value is not really a thing here. The game might be fun with friends, sadly they have Steam and I got the game on Gog, but Hammerwatch had good dynamics where people filled different roles. In Serious Sam, everyone would play the game...might still be fun. I'm seriously sorry, but you won't miss anything if you pass this like a rampaging werebull missing the player.

Kabooooom goes a suicidal alien :)

This game feels just so natural either on W,S,A,D + mouse and/or with a dual-stick gamepad. Such a nice "detour" from the classical FPS action where you get hit from all possible directions and never see it coming :) The pixaleted gore and number of breakable objects are nice-to-have features that I often found quite amusing. For those who seek an ocassional shmup with a pinch of DukeNukem-ish humor and wit, this might be just the one to pick up during a lunchbreak in your office :) (make sure the boss won't notice ^_^)

In a few hours...

you will understand how much the developers hate you. I thought this was "Heroes of Hammerwatch with hand made levels using the Serious Sam IP" what I got was pure. pain. I love the hammerwatch games. I thought I loved the developer. The game is an absolute. slog. on hard difficulty (and not even 'Serious Sam' difficulty). Speaking as someone who played FPS games since the early 90s, and beat all STALKER games on STALKER difficulty using only pistols. This game is sadistic. The difficulty is [UNFAIR]. It doesn't come from game mechanics. When to dodge, what gun to use? No problem. It comes from the developers lack of understanding of game mechanics. Remember the cubes in heroes of hammerwatch? Shoot the cube, enemies spawn, kill enemies, shoot the cube, repeat till cube is dead. The cube fights are here. Except now they spawn kamikazes. Which WOULD be okay, except they spawn randomly which includes literally on top of you, or, the exact direction you would dodge/roll out of the huge spawning pool of enemies. Nope, sorry, he was BEHIND YOU. Because you had all of .0025 seconds to react to that. On hard difficulty you get about TWO hits before you die. So imagine how much suffering you'll have when one (or both) of those hits were taken from you unfairly? You will die, over, and over, and over. And hilariously, even the games SAVE SYSTEM will kill you. Because it'll respawn you, in the middle of enemies. It'll respawn you with no guns. It'll respawn you with no health. And that moment when you took serious unfair damage? CONGRATS. AUTOSAVED. You will go from max health and armor, to 5 HP and no armor, in less than a second. More unfairness? Enemies (especially bosses) that can shoot at you from OUTSIDE THE SCREEN. They can literally shoot further than you, and the second you come into range the boss has already started his super-mega-ultra-attack spamming waves after wave of fireballs at you. The list just goes on. This game was not ready for primetime.

Good 2D coop shooter

It's good. The drawbacks mellow it out though. It's like when you enjoy something that has drawbacks that you can ignore, except the drawbacks here nullify that, and it concludes to an average game, but still good. Things you can love is the shooting, but you'll have to put skill points into upgrades and collect all the experience stars in the levels if you want your guns to actually work. There is probably too much walking, and the rockets just don't feel like they should, they feel like you need to be really accurate probably. You work your way up to a pretty nice amount of skill points by the end, like 80+, but then you don't really use it for a final level, instead there is a boss fight that is really drawn out, to put your last and final build to the test against the bad guy. It kind of works out, but kind of disappoints a little as well. There are moments when you can really tell they wanted to get the physics of the FPS into the 2D game when you see the pixel sparks from the lightning gun, or the flamethrower's flames burning on the ground, and how cool the railgun feels to fire through enemies in combination with the rocket launcher, which can feel a little like quake in your imaginations, but the game just doesn't quite deliver you on that point. It's its own little adventure, and worth buying for the cheap price we got it as. Some major complaints are things like requiring Galaxy because it was likely programmed with Social Multiplayer API in mind, like Steamworks. It therefore suffers from lack of drop-in drop-out coop traditional server and client architecture, of its parent FPS games and relatives (Doom/Quake/Wolfenstein).
