Description
In the near future, during their first interstellar travels, humans encounter a great evil that has been roaming the galaxy for the last few eons. This evil being is an incarnation of the last ancient immortals called Notorious Mental. Mental has set forth to wipe out the Human Race, just for fun, as it has with all the other civilizations in galactic history.

But the enemy has underestimated Earth’s defenses, a secret weapon left by the Sirians, an ancient race which fought against Mental on Earth in ancient times. This device, called the Timelock, will enable Special Forces veteran Sam 'Serious' Stone to return to the time of ancient Egypt and assassinate Mental, saving Mankind from extinction.

In a world where cyberpunk meets fantasy and hi-tech devices are mixed with black magic and psychic powers, Sam travels from the beautiful world of ancient Egypt through many diverse planets, confronting hordes of Mental's hideous minions on his way to the final showdown at Notorious Mental's lair.
  • Fight off wave after wave of countless cannon fodder and save mankind
  • Addictive, fast-paced gameplay topped with cheesy, Duke Nukem-style one-liners
  • Good level design with items, bottlenecks and cover in just the right places

I smell an ambush!

While Sam "Serious" Stone is one of those classic wisecracking FPS protagonists, in the vein of Duke Nukem or Lo Wang, don't be fooled; Serious Sam TFE doesn't really play like the classic 90s shooters that may have inspired it. Movement is essential, as is prioritizing enemies, both of which are hallmarks of classic shooters, however most levels are constructed as a series of interconnected and quite literal arenas (some quite massive) where waves upon waves of enemies will spawn. Some levels give respite from this, introducing some more confined interior areas, but by and large the game heavily focuses on outdoors arenas. You will frequently find yourself running in circles and usually backwards, frantically trying to keep a safe distance from the hordes and dodging attacks from the many enemy types that will charge you. It is this level design and the associated gameplay loop that make SS TFE feel quite different from the likes of Quake, Blood or other classic shooters. The reason I'm saying all this is because I often hear SS being thrown into the same category as id software or Build engine shooters and I feel that's only partly justified. The game IS extremely fun, but it's worth mentioning what sets it apart. The roster of enemies is quite diverse and they will require various strategies to deal with. You will quickly learn which enemies need to be your priority. The weapons are also fun to use, they each feel adequately unique, and to the game's credit most of them remain useful to the end. On higher difficulty levels you will be tested and it may become increasingly useful to spend time hunting for secrets (extra health, ammo or armor). The ending, in particular, is quite frantic. All in all, SS TFE is a charming experience, there are more than a few humorous moments and the story doesn't take itself... seriously. As a final note, if you buy this game, do yourself a favour and look for the "Steamify patch" on ModDB.

Seriously Awesome

One of the old guard, but like Barristan Selmy, he can still kick some serious butt. It's as old-school as they come, focusing on constantly being on the move, emphasizing twitch shooting over cover firing in most occasions, and just being alert as all heck as you never know where the next enemy will come from. But that does mean that it can get exhausting if played for hours at a time. Had to play it a bit at a time for how frantic it got, sometimes you just need a break from always being on edge. But that's the point of it; fast, frantic, furious action! And it does it damn well. Arena-like locations, wide, outside warzones, cramped quarters; a bit of everything and backed up by solid controls. If the controls weren't good, then there would be no saving it. If anything, it's my fault that I couldn't remember the pause button for whenever I ALT-TAB out of it, but that's what quick save/load is for, which is definitely needed. It's not an easy game. The ambushes can be unfair at times and it will plant hitscan chaingun scorpions at the worst possible locations and sometimes that kamikaze will spawn right behind you. I saved countless times, quick-save and regular saves, and had to reload almost just as many times. But it's the kind of difficulty that makes you want to try again, if not at the time of death then later. It got me coming back to try again and eventually reach the end. Pretty satisfying overall, and some nice set pieces along the way. For a twitch shooter, I can ask for nothing more. It being pretty funny at times certainly helps, and it runs hella well. Minor puzzles, barely there, and just so much carnage and action.

Brutal but so good

This is not a game about precision and brains... except that if your enemies had one, we could see a lof of them fly in the air while you kill them. This is a brutal FPS which mostly follows the same pattern: - Enter a room - The exits are sealed - Kill all the monsters - The exits are clear, continue to the next room No need to think or solve puzzle here, all you have to do is shoot. As we progress in the game, we encounter WAVES of ennemies (sometimes more than one hundres) and, in these cases, it is necessary to determine the best weapon for the job. If you need to decompress or relax, play it. It is fun and allows you to disconnect your brain a bit before going back to normal life. Also note that there is a story in the game and it is quite enjoyable.
