Very enjoyable survival/builder

A great survival/builder game set in feudal japan, with some stumbles and poor mid-late pacing. Great: - Beautiful environments. - A large set of buildings and structures to build with. - Customizable interiors. - Custom difficulty with a massive amount of options to tweak almost any aspect of the game. Combat can be disabled entirely, resource-free building modes, cheats and much, much more... - I liked the narrated 2d cutscenes as rare as they were. Decent: - The blueprint unlock progression could use improvement, it feels very confusing and convoluted at times. - Combat can be surprisingly good as long as you play in 3rd person with lock-on. - The user interface mostly does its job after a while of learning it, but it is unintuitive. Bad: - There is almost no narrative to speak of, there are maybe 5 total story quests. - Your villagers have no personality. They all look the same, there is no option to change their appearance, clothing or give them gear. - The Dynasty interface quickly becomes cumbersome and painful to use. The moment you have more than one village, it becomes almost unusable. - Different bandit factions should stay within their own region. Making progression from region to region more impactful and making earlier regions less painful. - Performance is only ok. The game also freezes for several seconds, in the evenings of each day once you have a lot of villagers working at once. Awful: - The raids escalate too quickly and villager AI is useless. The enemy difficulty compared to dynasty size is too harsh. - At some point mid-late game, trying to balance later dynasty needs (faith, luxury) clashes with the base ones (food, water), slowing expansion to a crawl. - Having to set 3-20 builders for Special Projects between seasons is miserable. Trying to reassign villagers back to their old jobs sometimes took half the in-game day.

Greatness has finally arrived!

Sengoku Dynasty is one of my favorite relaxing games to play after a hard day at work. There is plenty to see and do whether you like combat, exploring, or just plain building. The visuals are top notch and allow for a very immersive experience. If you're a fan of the other Dynasty games this will definitely be one to add to your collection.

You Will Be Busy

Medieval Dynasty is a fantastic game, and this is basically that game with some new editions and some streamlining. The main thrust of things is the game loop is both slow burn...and completely satisfying. The basic concept is you are a peasant trying to build a village, and you will do it building by building, villager by villager, stone by stone. You constantly have something to do, something you don't have, someone you need to talk to which might seem hectic but the world operates with the same rules you have. People need to walk to get around so bandits can't reach you in less than a couple days. Your villagers will need the same supplies you have so you need to gather for your stores to keep people fed and armed and with the right raw materials to use. Controls are tight. The one major issue with Medieval was the combat, but here's it's much smoother and satisfying. The speed for construction has been stepped up. Food and water have been combined. If you liked Medieval but wish it could get to the village stage faster without all the quests and walking, this is much more to the point. Almost immediately you're controlling a little group as opposed to the years it would take in Medieval. Different experience, but not a bad one. And like other dynasty games, this is the longhaul. TONS of micromanaging but a great U.I to use so it's not frustrating. Tons of events. Systems and peoples and creatures all operating independently. I recommend it to either fans of Medieval who like Japanese history or just people who find satisfaction in stepping away from a building they put together using logs they hewed and stones they gathered.

A good start for the last Dynasty entry

If you're not familiar with the Dynasty series, these games are a mix of survival & management, this entry being based in a specific Japanese period. They cared enough to even do proper Japanese voice-over, not only in cinematics but also in some ambient phrases which adds to the immersion! Now to get to the review, I'm pleasantly surprised by the state the game already is in. They've learned a lot from experience, and I'd go as far as saying that Sengoku Dynasty is a straight upgrade from the last version of Medieval Dynasty! Combat was especially clunky in Medieval, and that's where I've seen the most improvement: as long as you mind your stamina and the state of your weapon, you have many ways in fighting - block/parry, dodge, sprint, or just endure to deliver your own blow! Multitarget engagement can prove a bit painful, but relocate if need be, make use of consumables if you can, and there's definitely a more satisfying experience awaiting you! Village building is a lot more satisfying, against the early Medieval days. You can build extra workstations in a single building to optimize its use, with the example (even when caring about appearances!) of a forager hut capable of housing five forager stations for five different jobs. Management/building/needs menus however leave me dissatisfied. Unless I missed the option, I can't order anything (i.e. asc/descending orders for workers to immediately access the unemployed), I can't decide myself priority consumptions (whether it's villager consumption or production, you can only opt in/out) nor create sub-categories to hide workstations/needs/villagers I know I won't touch anymore. Some building menus run too deep with duplicates (tavern furniture!) and tool consumption is not computed; I found it messy to track each activity past 40 villagers. Still, given how Medieval improved in the past, give them some time: if you enjoy the genre and setting, the current product is already very well worth its price tag!
