I can't find it but it was a yellow PC disc it had commander keen, duke nukem, and my favorite
Secret Agent.
the fact this game was found honestly brought me to tears as this is the first game i play with my dad.
GOG back at it.
its a fun 2D platformer that has cool puzzles. Challenging as well.
The game runs at a perceived 20 FPS with relatively choppy controls. I don't blame DosBox, I think this is how the game was made.
There is only PC speaker sound. The usual 2019 gamer will probably turn it off because of agony. There is no music in the game.
The levels in the game are of strongly varying quality and difficulty.
There are levels where you HAVE to fail because you can not know what's coming (ex: laser barriers when falling). Some levels contain a lot of backtracking.
Sometimes levels have parts that are difficult just because of the controls (which means difficult for the wrong reason). An example are those water/acid pits with a low ceiling above them.
From my point of view the first levels were rather difficult. Later levels sometimes are easier. The best example for this was episode 3: The levels in the middle of the island were really difficult, while the last four levels (including the final castle!) were a lot easier.
Level length also varies strongly. Some levels are very long with a lot of backtracking which then also have a difficult spot right at the end.
All this is made worse by the fact that there are no checkpoints in the levels. You can only save between levels.
For reference: I first played this game when I was a lot younger and I also played Commander Keen.
What you get with this game is a nice simple platformer with levels of varying quality. If you can live with the fact that on some levels the developers obviously didn't care about the player then I think you can have some fun with this game.
My final time was a bit above 5 hours for all episodes.
Like many others I have fond memories of playing these old PC games back in the late 80's / early 90's. While it may not have had the popularity of other games such as Duke Nukem or Commander Keen, Secret Agent is a fun, challenging, and well thought out adventure!
I sure am glad to see GOG bring these classics back playable on modern PCs!
Thanks GOG!
Whenever I need a break from huge, sprawling games that are the norm nowadays with triple-A studios, I find myself going back to a couple of DOS games time and again, including this and Crystal Caves, which follows a similar gameplay style.
There's no deep mechanic here, it's simply clearing out levels through 2D platforming challenges. There isn't even a boss here, but the game is still satisfying to play even today.
The good:
- platforming and controls are solid
- levels seem simple yet present a good challenge
- no real replayability value, but still fun to go through again and again
The bad:
- 2D sprites are on the rougher end of the scale (not the developer's fault, mind, this is fairly good art when it came out originally), I'm fine with the art, but may not be to others' liking
- no background music, and simple SFX (again, more of a function of the time it was made originally)
The ugly:
- nah, there's nothing overly bad about this game
Verdict: At $5.99, really, you can't go wrong with this if 2D platforming is your cup of tea. This is an underrated classic.
I remember playing the first episode as a kid and having fun with it. Present day, I still had fun with it. It's really good for what it is, offering solid platforming action, a bit of thinking in map progression and some challenges. Getting all the loot is another bag of worms but if you're just going through it, collecting what's in your path and aiming for the end, then it wouldn't take you too long to beat.
No bugs that I can recall, and while some jumps are tricky or need serious precision to get on that one block or moving platform, the controls felt solid. It feels good, which is half the battle in games like this. On sale, it's well worth checking out but definitely play it in bursts. I tried to blaze through it and I could feel myself burning out on it.
