Build your wealth and reputation and use it to acquire bigger ships and better crewman. Hire other captains to join you in attacking and capturing other ships or forts. Where you go and what you do is up to you. The choices in Sea Dogs are endless, and so is the fun.

Nonlinear campaign allows players to choose quests or play the game any way they want.
20 different ship types to choose from, from small boats to large battleships.
Location-specific ship damage allows you to send their sails up in flames, bring the mast crashing to the deck, or shoot holes in the hull.

It's not hard to see why this game got good reviews back on release and people remember it fondly. Unfortunately now that the novelty has worn off 3D graphics and worlds this emerges as a game that combines average writing with awkward interface design.
For anyone who has played one or two other, more recent games that involve sail powered warships this doesn't offer anything worth the cost of admission.
The controls are bizarre. Operating the game is like a contortion exercise. I spent an hour trying to give it a fair chance, but I found it almost unplayable. Not worthwhile at any price.
I suspect the 5-star ratings are due to rose tinted nostalgia goggles.
I had no idea what this game was, I was sold by other reviewers praise of this. I did play Sid Meyers Pirates! (The 2004 one) when it was new and can see why I never heard of this game. I can absolutely forgive the graphics, but the gameplay in this one is just awful. You really can't aim or do much of anything to hit with the cannons. Somehow the AI knows the trick though, so you're just hosed.
Outside of GOG, no one even knows about this game and other games pull more search results. A walkthrough was the best I found, but it honestly did little to help understand the game. The game itself gives next to no tutorial (a few random townspeople give you advice on the "what" but not the "how"). Even making sure you only face off with other very small ships like your own, the combat is tedious and slow thanks to basically lobbing cannons in every random direction whenever it feels like firing.
You could learn around the games flawed design, master its weird mechanics, and maybe get something out of it. Personally, I'm just going back to Pirates! as it was so much more fun than this clunky mess.
