Description
Choose your faction, explore new territories, produce resources and seize power to cover your people in gold and glory!
Take command and turn your faction into the most powerful in all of Europa!
Scythe transports you to an alternate reality in 1920s Europa, one ravaged by the First World War. Take up the role of leader by assuming command of one of 5 factions, and set out to conquer the coveted "Factory". Lead your mechs to war and your people to victory!
"In an alternate reality in 1920s Europa, it's been several years since the ""Great War"", but the ashes of the conflict are still hot and the war is entering a new phase. The first conflict saw the emergence of some incredible engines of war known as Mechs. Built by ""The Factory"", an independent city-state which has since become the object of everyone's desire, these technological monstrosities roam the snowy landscapes of Europa. Be the hero of one of the five factions – Saxony Empire, Crimean Khanate, Rusviet Union, Polania Republic or Nordic Kingdom – and become the richest and most powerful nation in all of Europa during these dark times! To assure the victory of your people, you will need to explore and conquer new territories, enlist new recruits and deploy your forces by building formidable and terrifying combat Mechs. Replay history in a fictional past full of mechanical engines and technology, where each choice you make will be critical. Choose your battles with care, because in Scythe, victory is achieved with and for the people!

Gameplay:
- Asymmetry: every player starts the game with different resources (energy, coins, keen combat sense, popularity…), a different starting location and a secret objective. The starting positions are specifically set to contribute to the uniqueness of every faction and the asymmetrical nature of the game.
- Strategy: Scythe offers players almost complete control over their fate. The only elements of chance apart from each player's individual secrete objective card are the Encounter cards, which players draw to interact with the citizens of newly explored lands. Combat is also handled by way of choice; no luck or chance is involved.
- Engine Building: Players can improve their construction abilities to become more efficient, build structures that improve their position on the map, enlist new recruits into their faction, activate mechs to dissuade opponents from invading and expand their borders to reap greater types and quantities of resources. This aspect creates a feeling of energy and progression over the course of the entire game. The order in which players get to develop their economy and technologies adds to the unique feel of every game, even when playing as the same faction several times.

Features:
•    Official adaptation of the award-winning board game
•    4X strategy game (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate)

Buyer beware! Ingame popups.

The developer Asmodee Digital has added game interrupting popups nagging players to register an account at their site, as if this was an F2P game. Do not buy from these phonies unless you want to be interrupted once every 5 minutes or so.

Shame about the AI

It's a pretty good implementation of the boardgame in general; especially aesthetically- all the (excellent) art is there and the sound and animation work very nicely. And the boardgame is certainly good; it's perhaps worth noting that it's not really a wargame, for all that it may look like one. Slightly minor point is that there hasn't been a lot of effort to allow customisation; there's no option for a modular board, for example, which really couldn't have been hard to add (there is a physical expansion for it) in a digital version. There are a few setup options, but not many. Main complaint, though, especially for someone like me who's not much of a fan of online play, is that the bot AI is *really* bad. I can easily beat the "hard" AI with only three games total under my belt (I've never played the physical version). So I definitely wouldn't recommend it for single-player. There's also very little meta-progression (e.g. single player challenges)- there are a few card-unlocks, but you'll have those within a couple of games, most likely. Possibly I've been spoilt by the last digital boardgame I brought, which was Through the Ages, which is excellent.

A very interesting Game

On the surface this game may seem quite complex and not very 'Newcomer-friendly', even after a large part of the tutorial a lot of the questions remain. But after a few matches against the computer you really find out how to play. This game is not only about fighting your enemy and the last remaining wins. It is more about gathering resources, control territory and play your cards right. You have always be two steps ahead of your opponent and try to make as much points as possible. And this is what this game is all about ... about making points. Points are determined by recruiting workers, gather resources, building Mechs and Structures, etc. The player with the most points wins and the game is over. The game comes with three different gamemodes you can choose: player vs machine, player vs. player (local on one Screen) or player vs. player (via Internet, which unfortunately needs a third-party-Account). The Soundtrack is superb and even oustide the game I sometimes listen to it while working. The wonderful drawn pictures and screens are amazing and have these typical board-game-vibes. My only complaints about the Design are the hero-models, they could use some more polygons/more smoothness, but everything else is fine. I really enjoy playing this game and with friends it is even more fun.

If Catan had a baby with Talisman..

Then they added a TON of fine control and various other mechanics that manage to make it both incredibly deep and obnoxiously frustrating at the same time. Yes, I recommend it, if you're willing to put in the time to learn the game and play with people rather than against the AI that seems to shift between sucking so bad as to be ridiculous and sweeping through so hard and fast you've lost before you realize what happens. That may have something to do with me being a consolidator in games like this though, building up a small section before moving out, which is why I don't have that "First to a Factory" trophy yet. I tend to end up being invincible or getting totally thrashed with no in between.

A multiplayer only port of a bad game

IF you are already a fan of the boardgame and are interested in only multiplayer with friends, bump this rating up to 5 stars and pick it up. It is technically fine for that. The singleplayer AI is clueless and any beginner can always beat the hardest difficulty after only a few games. So that portion of the game is useless for fans and newcomers. If you haven't played the boardgame and were curious, don't. $20 is way too much to find out about one of the most overrated board games of the 2010s. People got suckered in by the cool setting, mechs, and artwork. At its heart, Scythe is a really bland economic euro game that's so deterministic, every faction has an exact optimal scripted turn sequence for the entire first half of the game. It barely changes as you make contact with other players and conflict is only a tiny fraction that's mostly there just to check off an objective box. Players who know the optimal action path can take on the handicap of having to plan ahead in 3 turn chunks, and still win because the game has that little malleability I'm not the biggest fan of Terra Mystica, but it's nearly the same game and much better than this with a better AI in the digital version. If you want to invest in a physical game, Arcs is a MUCH better version of this. (this is going to get downvoted to hell by Scythe fans, and I refer them back to my opening sentence)
