Lights blur. The crowd whizzes past. Your helmet rattles against the roll bar and the competition switches into overdrive. Tears stream from your eyes and the race moves into extreme speed. Tears of sweat. The same stuff that's seeping off your palms and onto the steering wheel. Get a grip. You're sliding into a turn at 200 miles per hour and centrifugal force will only carry you so far.

This is velocity-driven, pedal-to-the-metal arcade racing. Strapped into a personally chosen made-for-the-Autobahn racing machine, you'll scream to redefine fast in this winding 3D ride of pure fun.
  • Great, addictive, arcade-style gameplay
  • Driving mechanics so unrealistic they’ll make you wish you could powerslide like that in real life!
  • If you didn’t have a Pentium processor back in 1995, now is your chance to finally play this game!

Ridge Racer PC :)

I made a similar review for Screamer 2, but I'll repeat it here again: It's Ridge Racer for PC, pretty much. It's floaty arcade racing, not realistic, but very suitable for casual players. The graphics are pre-3d acceleration, so no fancy lighting affects or filtering, but it has those nice PS1 era gritty textures that a lot of us who grew up in the 90s just love. In 1995, the very detailed textures and things like real time reflections in the car windows were top notch, especially coming from a small studio. It gets the rather high rating from me, since there weren't a ton of games like this compared to, say, the PS1 that had Ridge Racer et al. Of course, no 5 stars, since it didn't do anything ground breaking at the time.

Hmmm ....

If the producers had taken the necessary time they needed to have made the Controller properly, then Screamer could have been a really great game. And then I have given Screamer 5 stars without hesitation. Both the Graphic and Sound of Screamer is what you can expect from the 80'ties - and up to the middle of the 90'ties - hardware, and not what you can expect from todays hardware. But what many producers still do not understand - even today - is the fact, that as long as the GAMEPLAY is great, then the graphic and sound does not matter. Since it was not possible to give 2,5 stars I have only given 2 stars. Screamer is a great example of an only half-working product that was hurried too (tooooo) fast on the market.

Shows its age, but still fun

Fist things first: if you played Screamer when it came out, you don't need this review. BUY IT! If you don't, you'll need a little introduction. Back in 1995, the Sony Playstation and the Sega Saturn were graphical powerhouses and to show off their capabilities, nothing was better than arcade style racing games. The Saturn had Daytona USA, and the Playstation had Ridge Racer, both excellent arcade ports by Sega and Namco. The PC had none. Until a small Italian company called Graffiti decided to step in call and claim their place. Screamer was designed to be an arcade game even if it was released only on PC: there are checkpoints, the name entry is limited to 3 characters only, the driving model is totally unrealistic and you can pick it up and play it very easily. Graffiti also added some extra modes, like Time Attack and Cone Carnage, where you hit cones with your car to get time extends, and you can unlock a backward version of each track. The graphics are still good, even with the heavy pixellated textures and short draw distance. There's a lot of stuff going on in the backgrounds that you probably won't notice on your first lap, and each track has its own distinctive style. There are games on GOG that can still be considered better than modern ones, in some aspects. To be honest, Screamer it NOT one of them. It was awesome back then and can be still fun today, but you must be able to put it into perspective.

Aged a lot but still playable

I first played this game in 1996 and I really enjoyed it. 16 years later it is still fun, though only for a couple of hours. There are 6 unique racing tracks only and you can win the championship easily. It brought back nice memories from my childhood though.

PC exclusiv racer with emulation issues

In 1995 great arcade racers like Ridge Racer or Daytona USA were exclusiv in arcade halls. Home consoles and PCs mostly had pseudo 3D racers were most objects were sprites. Screamer (or Bleifuss in Germany) brought the arcade feeling to the PC. It's a fun racer with a bunch of cars and colorful track with a lot of animated stuff around like helicopters or moving cranes. But compared to the arcade hall games it's quite lame. The music is uninspiring. The physics are weird and the cars move to the side like dune buggies. I guess it only became a classic because it has no competitors on the PC for quite a while. The later Daytona USA port was a disappointment. It has three detail levels for graphic and the hightest demanded a powerful Pentium processor back in the day and still provides problems to DosBox for emulation. In "High Detail"-Mode a lot of players )including myself) experience problems there with the GoG version as mine always crashes after a few rounds. Mid or low details work fine. A great feature is the cloud saving for this one.
