Description

Scorn is an atmospheric first-person horror adventure game set in a nightmarish universe of odd forms and somber tapestry.

It is designed around the idea of "being thrown into the world". Isolated and lost inside this dream-like world, you will explore different interconnected regions in a non-linear fashion. The unsettling environment is a character itself.

Every location contains its own theme (story), puzzles and characters that are integral in creating a cohesive world. Throughout the game you will open up new areas, acquire different skill sets, weapons, various items and try to comprehend the sights presented to you.

GAMEPLAY FEATURES

COHESIVE "LIVED-IN" WORLD
Scorn takes place in an open-ended world with different interconnected regions. Each region is a maze-like structure with various rooms and paths to discover. All the storytelling happens in-game, with no cut-scenes to distract you from the grisly reality of the living, breathing world you’re in. But keep your eyes open - the game won’t show you any sympathy if you miss something important on your uneasy travels.

FULL BODY AWARENESS
Players will experience better immersion being aware of the character’s body and movement. Interaction with the world is realistic - objects are picked up with your hands (instead of just floating in midair), machines and instruments are operated by grabbing the controls, etc.

INVENTORY AND AMMO MANAGEMENT
Your loadout is defined and limited. This plays a big role in keeping the player in an even greater state of awareness throughout the whole game. Players will have to think about when to fight and when to take cover and how their actions affect the world around them. Different play styles will be needed to advance.

Kind of just left... whelmed.

I already knew that Scorn wasn't rated as an amazing game, but the game really just leaves you with the feeling of wanting more. It tells you nothing, shows a lot but doesn't communicate at that much with its visual storytelling, and you're kinda just left with... something pretty, but little substance. If there was considerably more story and explaination for what has happened in this world, it would be vastly more interesting. Instead, we're told borderline nothing, in any way you can communicate something. If you're the type that loves to speculate, you might enjoy this, but this is ultimately a game with next to nothing to tell, but the environment and art in this game is exceptional. Beyond that... there's nothing. There's a considerable difference between being a bit vague, not overexplaining, not "revealing" too much and boxing yourself in as a writer, etc... and then just communicating nothing at all. Which begs the question if that's the intention. Like a painting where the artist isn't interesting in comminicating their thoughts and such to the viewer, but opposite, for the artist see what the viewer thinks and feels about it. The problem with that mentality though, is that people are ALWAYS going to have thoughts on a given work, so when the artist barely communicates their thoughts at all... it's like a relationship where one side just never reciprocates, and no one is surprised that the relationship failed.

Super boring

Scorn is one of the most boring games I've ever played. I'm so glad I didn't pay a dime for it. Even E.T. on Atari makes more fun. In the first hall you're running around & try to find out what you even have to do. After you ran through the whole multiple stages hall 2-3 times cos you know you missed something & click on every single wall, corpses & stuff, but you don't know how it could even look like or what it could even be, you look into a walkthrough automatically & find out there's a small tube going up, when you run directly into it, which no lifeform on earth would ever do, cos it's between a road fork ramp, where you can go up left or right. Then there's a "slide puzzle" on a wall, where the "end" is a light. The rest are stones - all look the same 1:1, so you try & try for 30 minutes to put every single one on the light & do the slow animation again & again, till you look into the internet AGAIN, to find out that in all of these same stones there's two pixels of a light on one of them. I couldn't even really see it on a 65" OLED TV which is 3m in front of me with HDR on. All the time you just run here, run there, run riddle, run wherever... Graphics are dull and depressive, but okay in 2160p and maxed, sadly no raytracing, which would've given the whole thing more punch and would have made some riddles clearer. Sound design is okay, but you basically just hear some random noises. There are "enemies" which aren't really enemies, just when you come too close & fighting them is stupid & thrown out lifetime, cos the "weapon" you have doesn't do damage at all (I think you need like 1-1 1/2 minutes for a single enemy). In the end I ended up in a multiple stage hall with cages again, after I gave the game 2 more tries in 2 days, then on another slide puzzle I had no nerves anymore & nearly sleeped away, so I deleted it with pleasure. My lifetime is stolen, no one can give it back.

Art project first, game second

If you're going into this expecting an actual game, you're going to be disappointed. This is meant to be a narrative, albiet confusing, experience and any actual gameplay and mechanics take a backseat from start to finish.

cool & interesting experience

If you are open to this kind of art style or a fan, this is a cool & interesting experience: the game lives from the design, obviously, and the player's imagination. You don't know what you are doing or why. There's no regular storyline, but taking item A and putting it in B, than walk to C (to put it bluntly). The game has some combat, but many engagements are avoidable and that's what you should do in order to save ammo. It's not a combat system that needs any further explanation and the game could've easily done well without any FPS combat. The game is rather short, but that's totally fine for what it's meant to deliver. Yet, it could use a sequel of some sort. If you browse through the artbook, you know what I mean.
