Imagine a world created out of insanity – deformed children, ancient gods, ghosts from your past in the house inside of a water reflection. You are an asylum patient and you have just survived a car crash – the problem is you can't remember anything. Visions reveal answers to some questions, but create even more riddles! Which part of it is true? What do all these things mean?
Sanitarium is one of the few psychological horror adventure games. As the protagonist you will visit five different worlds full of riddles and answers, with which you will have to figure out what exactly is happening and what is real. The story is so incredibly good and enthralling that it could easily drive a sane person mad.
One of the most immersive and chilling psychological horror games ever created
Discover what your warped mind is hiding under the veil of a psychedelic dream
Explore surreal worlds inhabited by crazy, half-sane and or half-dead characters
As far as point 'n click games from 98 goes, this one have some fine moments.
Puzzle's solutions were understandable and reasonable, I don't remember any 'moon logic' puzzles. Sometimes however was difficult to identify what was decoration or object with interaction.
I did use cheat engine to speed the walking, but despite the slow movement and gameplay, the story and crazy scenarios are very compeling. Also is not too long, so the trouble was minimal.
This was a good game overall. The story was good and it had plenty of cheesy humor. Very atmospheric and both graphics and sound were good, though dated considering the age of the game. Combat was pretty terrible, but there isn't much of that in the game thankfully. Also when you die in combat you respawn and don't lose any ground in the fight. Just continue where you left off, so this is by no means a deal breaker, just a minor annoyance.
However, this game is very prone to crashing on newer systems. By newer I mean Windows 7 and up. Not sure about XP. I've tried this on many machines with many hardware and software configurations and every one of them has frequent crashes. After going through every troubleshooting method I can find online, I still have frequent crashes. So basically learn to spam quicksave and be prepared to reload constantly. It's annoying, but it's possible to get through the game this way. It's a relatively short game as well, which I'm glad for considering the bugs.
Overall it's worth playing. Just be patient with it and spam quicksave constantly.
