Imagine a world created out of insanity – deformed children, ancient gods, ghosts from your past in the house inside of a water reflection. You are an asylum patient and you have just survived a car crash – the problem is you can't remember anything. Visions reveal answers to some questions, but create even more riddles! Which part of it is true? What do all these things mean?
Sanitarium is one of the few psychological horror adventure games. As the protagonist you will visit five different worlds full of riddles and answers, with which you will have to figure out what exactly is happening and what is real. The story is so incredibly good and enthralling that it could easily drive a sane person mad.
One of the most immersive and chilling psychological horror games ever created
Discover what your warped mind is hiding under the veil of a psychedelic dream
Explore surreal worlds inhabited by crazy, half-sane and or half-dead characters
This is a essential experience if you are a fan of point and click games. I personally feel as though this game has TRANSFORMOGRAPHAGIZED the P&C genre and it's feels so unfortunate that this hasd almost become a hidden gem.
Some puzzles require an extra ounce of IQ that I was severely lacking in many instances but if you are a never giver upper it will never stop you. last puzzle at boss was giga easy because im am a god gamer.
Sanitarium is a horror point-and-click adventure game, where you play as an amnesiac man who woke up in an insane asylum after a car crash. He tries to figure his identity and a way out, but his broken mind also conjures up alternate realities relevant with his memories, such as a circus, alien world, and Aztec village. We get to play as other characters sometimes in these realities, each with their own personalities and struggles.
Gameplay follows the usual formula of finding objects and using them, also solving puzzles and minigames. One thing I enjoy is that despite being an older title, unlike many of the genre of its age, the puzzles are quite simple and logical, yet also manage to be creative due to its setting. One of my favorite puzzle is the part where we can switch characters at will, and puzzles that require their different abilities such as strength or small size. Too bad that section was too short, it should've been longer.
My problem with this game is the buggy controls. It's pretty strange that you cannot click to go somewhere, you'd have to hold the right mouse button or use arrow keys, but even worse that sometimes when you launch the game or load a save, it bugs and gets stuck in the movement mode. Loading a save or relaunching the game usually fixes this, but I still don't understand what really causes or fixes this.
In conclusion, if you like point-and-click games, especially the older ones, you'll have a great time playing Sanitarium. Especially if you like the ones that are a bit surreal or with a touch of horror. It's not too difficult, and not too scary either. If it doesn't launch for you as it did for me, you can simply download a different version of ScummVM and replace the one in the game folder.
If you have played a lot of point and click adventure games in the past this one isn't going to challenge you very much. While it is a pretty simple game it is also a lot of fun. The story really drives it.
My main issue with the game is that it crashes quite a lot. Make sure you save every few minutes so you don't have to repeat things everytime there is a cutscene and the game dumps to the desktop.
This is the best game I've ever played. Too bad it can't run in in Windows 7 (The only one I was able to play with was win98 :, even tried with a Win98 Virtual Machine)
