Imagine a world created out of insanity – deformed children, ancient gods, ghosts from your past in the house inside of a water reflection. You are an asylum patient and you have just survived a car crash – the problem is you can't remember anything. Visions reveal answers to some questions, but create even more riddles! Which part of it is true? What do all these things mean?
Sanitarium is one of the few psychological horror adventure games. As the protagonist you will visit five different worlds full of riddles and answers, with which you will have to figure out what exactly is happening and what is real. The story is so incredibly good and enthralling that it could easily drive a sane person mad.
One of the most immersive and chilling psychological horror games ever created
Discover what your warped mind is hiding under the veil of a psychedelic dream
Explore surreal worlds inhabited by crazy, half-sane and or half-dead characters
First and the foremost verdict: A game like Sanitarium was never created before and no other adventure game could ever reach half of the power of this game over its players, even after years from its launching.

Yes, the graphics and the sounds of the new games are enhanced now, but the story, the gameplay of Sanitarium has a unique power... Just like living in a dream... You can even feel the chill and inhale the scent of the neverending "dim" atmosphere... It reels you in... Even in the world of high-def 3D games...
A heart-wrenching story blended with horror but nothing cheesy... The gore, the blood, the disturbance has a dignity... A story which makes you afraid, disturbed, but enchanted, at the same time, all the time...
A book, which you would want to stay awake for 48 hours and finish completely, is very hard to find...
So is an adventure game which you would want to finish in one session...
Today, if Sanitarium gets re-created, it will be a legend, once again, even if it cannot have this new multiplayer online marketing security tactics...
Finally... I strongly suggest you buy the legend... The price is hilarious when compared to what you'll get... There are only a few adventure games in the history of gaming, like Sanitarium...
Best Regards,
This game was my first adventure game in years, and was very interesting to play. All places you visit are very different from each other. The puzzles are mostly very logical, in very rare occassions I had to read an online guide to solve them ( one or two near the end, for instance). I highly recommend it.
This was one of the first games I've purchased from gog, and I have to say I'm pleased. The game plays in classic point and click style, so fans of the genre should know what to expect. Where it really shines, however, is the story. As you delve into the main characters frequent bouts of insanity, you begin to see the subtle parallels to what happened in the real world. In that way, it reminds me a bit of Psychonauts. A fun old game with a horror twist, and a worthy purchase, though I would wait for a sale. As good as it is, it just doesn't feel like a $10 game. I bought it during one of gog's many sales for $5, and that seemed just right for this little gem.
I never played this game in its heyday. I picked it up during the sale and spent this past weekend playing all the way through it, because even though I'm not a huge adventure fan, I like games that try a different angle on the genre. Sanitarium does this from start to finish (and man, the last two areas of the game are AWESOME). The easiest thing to say is that this game is a mindf**k. From one section to the next, you will be asking yourself "what just happened, and why?", but it is tied together nicely by the end. The visuals and ideas on display are astounding.
I thought the protagonist's voice acting was really bland, and sounded like a guy recording in a studio instead of a character. That, and the frustrating stair climbing movement controls got a little annoying (just the stairs...the rest was fine). I admit that I cheated on a couple things, mostly because I failed to fully explore an area or just didn't see something, but there are no puzzles in the game that are all that hard.
Actually, now that I think about it, the whole "revelation" part is never really explained....oh well.
