Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
The atmosphere is fantastically done through, voice acting, art design, and music.
Speaking of which, has a Witcher 3 syndrom, that I purposely waited ten minutes at the start menu, or fought the foes a little longer to listen to it, and I really wished that it would be included in the bonus bundle but unfortunately, it's not.
The graphics aren't one of the most ground breaking, but are still appropriate.
The game play, is simple (hack-slash), but the tactical map, where you place your traps adds depth, and permanent decision to your battle.
The story, will have some plot twists, and is quite interesting.
Great Job Artifice Studio, and thank you GOG
SHORTLY STRATEGİC OR COMBAT(BRUTAL) STYLE BUT COMBAT SOME TİMES LİTTLE BİT HARD SO YOU MUST MAKE STRATEGY AND PLACE TRAP. GOOD STORY, GOOD MUSİCS AND GOOD ATMOSPHER. İF YOU LİKE THİS STYLE YOU MUST THE TRY THİS GAME.
You can play this game very very strategic or brutal but brutal (I mean combat) little bit hard for start and after save money, level up and buy good equepment brutal is very very easy :D and add mid lvl strategy game going to be too easy but you can play hard difficult. Combat style is take much time and at first hard so you must make mid lvl strategy because enemy are too much some times.
Sorry for my english I hope be helpfull.
In Sang-Froid you play as a lumberjack who must fight every night against creatures, mostly wolves and werewolves, to protect your home and your neighboor's.
The game has a good atmosphere, very entertaining gameplay and quite some new ideas. There are many pros and cons, but the gameplay is definetly it's biggest strength.
The description on the store's page brings attention to the fear factor system, which is quite an interesting and atmosphere-establishing mechanic, but it's far from being the main attraction gameplay-wise. It's in the strategic elements that the game truly shines. At every level you must carefully place different traps at different spost to try and outsmart the waves of enemies that are coming to ruin your structures. Planning the interactions, sequencing and timing of the traps is a very satisfying experience. Many of the traps need to be manually triggered and demand your attention to work properly, this makes the player get involved in the process in a way that tower defence games don't usually do since your "structures" often do the whole job by themselves. Many games in the genre give you a character to control so you can fight alongside your traps, but here you must also operate them in order for everything to work out well.
Fighting, on the other hand, is pretty bad. The fear factor system is all about helping you in a fight, but the combat system way too slow and clunky.
The game's story is bland. Graphics are also lacking, but fine. Animations, specifically cutscene animatons, on the other hand, aren't looking great at all. Despite this, the atmosphere is quite nice and so is the soundtrack. It is not scary at all though, despite being categorized as a horror game.
I would definetly recommend the game to anybody who is after a good tower defence game or strategic gameplay in general. It is very fun to play, offers quite an unique experience with many new ideas and the atmosphere is on point. It just lacks is a little bit of polish.
After owning this game for years and seeing that the developer made it free, it was a good reason to finally play it and write a review. Sang-Froid isn't perfect but it has a lot of character. Graphically it will likely run on anything these days and it presents the story akin to Visual Novels except they use the in-game character models with actual lip sync which I thought was a nice touch.
Gameplay is similar to Orcs Must Die! in that you navigate a map setting traps and fighting waves of enemies along the way. However, it's a little different here in that you can only lay traps before you start the map, so consider carefully on where you want to place them. There is also a surprisingly deep combat system for your character. You have a rage meter, 3rd person shooting with era-appropriate reloading and a fear and dodge mechanic. Ultimately, this is a decent tower defense game.
However, it's not without its flaws. The character animations can be a bit clunky and the story is kind of OK. Voice acting sounds like they had people local to the setting of the game which sort of works. They have the appropriate accent but the delivery of the script isn't perfect.
While I would say maybe wait for a sale in the past, now it's a good game for the price of free. I would recommend this especially to those who are playing on low-spec hardware and some patience for a slow tutorial, Sang-Froid - Tales of Werewolves is worth checking out.
I purchased this game originally on Steam when it was first released. I played it then and genuinely enjoyed it. Being able to get it here on GOG for free is amazing!
To talk about the game a little:
It is a 3rd person action game with a strategy phase before each level. You see what enemies you will be facing and where they will be coming from and can set up traps and other useful tools around the map before you go into the level.
You then defeat the enemies with a hack and slash style combat but you have a dodge that you can use to avoid the enemy's attacks. When I had my friend try it he compared it to Dark Souls combat. I see what he is trying to say, but the controls are not that tight in my opinion. Yes you go in and attack and then dodge out of the way but it doesn't feel as good as Dark Souls.
You can choose between two different characters to play and each one has their own skill tree. Some of the skills are shared between the characters but many skills are exclusive to only one of the characters. Some of the skills are very interesting and completely change the way you approach a level in the strategy section.
For example: My first time playing I went into a bait skill that lured enemies in and they would eat the bait. Then I upgraded it to be poison bait. After that I got a skill that allowed me to place blockades around the map. Before I knew it I had turned the game into a pseudo tower defense game and it was nothing like that at the start. My friend played the game completely differently because he got different skills and on my subsequent playthroughs I tried using different skills and I couldn't play the game like a tower defense anymore.
The cut-scenes may put some people off because they don't look great, but I actually really enjoyed how cheesy they were and it was fun to laugh at them while listening to the story. I think this is a great game and for free you have nothing to lose but a little bit of time. I would say give it a shot.
