It runs, but that's about it.
The game is very awkward. The controls just feel off, there's little understanding of what to do, and what I've played of it so far has just been uninteresting.
At least I'm only out five bucks.
I got this because of some friends wanting to group in it. NP, I got the game. It had the fun factor down. What it didnt have was challenge. I ran the Vampire, it was like I took a chainsaw to a knife fight. I bulldozed through the game with such an incredible level of ease, I think I stopped adding skill points for challenge. By the time I beat the final boss in Nightmare, or whatever the second level was called. (I accidently borked the main quest in the original. I killed one of the world dragons from chapter 4 in chapter 2 and the questline BROKE, it was the one in the volcanic area). So I restarted in Nightmare. I still wasnt adding in points, I got the the final boss and my game kept glitching. In frustration I called my buddy who asked me to get it and sent him my save game, he beat it and sent it back. I think I had like 40 points to distribute for the main big-bad and hardly got hit. I used like 4 HP pots. My friends who played it were of the same mind, fun but too easy.
Now, there were alot of details that I so thoroughly enjoyed. Read the headstone in the graveyards. "Last thing he said was, Gee I wonder if Dragons are tickelish". Or the was a huge mound "Unmarked mass grave. Rumored to be the beta characters" next one over was a defiled grave, that stone read "Developer who killed the Beta Characters".
The original was kinda buggy, but the expansion was a disaster of bugs. I gave up not overly far into the expansion due to all the quests crapping out on me. Like one early on, I had to go into some cave deal, I walk in, instead of zoning in, I am ported back about 10 feet, after i tried again, the world stopped interacting. I was told it was a normal bug. I have heard that it got alot better with time, but in spite of it being generally fun, and having alot of amusing features, the combo of oddball bugs and being painfully easy lead me away form it.
When Sacred 1.0 was released, the game was a buggy hell. But also a hell lot of fun. 50% of all quests was like: <Farmer>:" A zombie is haunting us. He also stole all my gold." |Go to cave|kill Zombies| get 200 gold as reward (800 gold is a normal drop at that time)| I even got a bug which prevent triggering the last boss (plus no old save).
But here comes one strength of Sacred -> the map. The world is huge and even with a horse it took quite a long time to travel from one end to the other. You got all climate zones, filled with every enemy, a good rpg should have. But what´s about the replayability of this static map? Just be honest at this moment and think of diablo´s procedurally generated maps. Yes they are always different, but when you know what your doing you´re just searching/running through mazes/caves/open fields to look for the next path or boss. A static map has more chances for eyecandy. We got rivers, mountains, woods and small special locations for explorers.
Example: First 1/3 of the game, somewhere near the woods you´ll find a failed ritual. Dead mages bodies, a shrine and a pissed off demon. There is no special reward or weapon for killing the demon, its just for the sake of exploring. You will find hideouts guarded by giant dragons (good loot + lots of exp) and a lot (i mean a lot) easter eggs. The second strength are the characters. Most of them are fairly unique and each have a special voice. The game was made by a german company and they hired (of course) german voice actors of famous american movie actors. If you speak german you really should get the language patch (search on gog forum). At least 40% of the easter eggs have a german background, so i don´t know if they´re good translated / transformed in the other versions.
Due to the character limit I have to stop here. Get this game, play it with friends (works fine via LAN), enjoy the improved (thanks to the addon) game, kill some things and level up.
