The Saboteur™

It is very much of it's time, so don't expect UE5 levels of graphics, but if you've never experienced it, it's such a cool idea executed in an amazing way. The gameplay is fun, the story is well written and has good depth and there are constant looney tunes style jokes and comments at the expense of the *azis which always puts a smile on your face. Good old fashioned fun. If graphics are giving you a headache, google where the .ini is for the graphics config. That sorts it's issues out.

It would've been a great competitor to the trist gta 4 back then, lovely music, oppressive atmosphere, a limited (beginning cross-country) free-roam mode. But consolization heavily impairs the gameplay. The camera controls are wonky, limited, the movement, like in gta 4, is sluggish, the character has an inertia the player isn't given a reason to assume. The parkouring system is slow, the cover system annoying, the menus unnecessarily floaty, unprecise, dumbed down and consolized. Having to snipe enemies is no fun, the controller axis are recognized but not the buttons due to the xinput monopoly. A potential killer idea ruined by their consoles origin.

In short, the most fun elements in the game are satisfying missions and the environmental destruction elements á la Red Faction that actually affects the gameplay. It is simply very fun to destroy those Nazi installations to create your own Nazi free zones. The biggest boon of this game is that it cuts down on the annoying and boring elements such as the cops in GTA 4 that will get you and make you feel like fighting them is pointless. In this game, shooting Nazis is definitely easier than in GTA 4, though the whole process is an overall fun experience to the point that dying is completely your own fault and you will not feel bad about dying. The most vital part of any game is the gameplay. The Saboteur has insanely fun gameplay. It is hard to not enjoy this game as it doesn't try to be too realistic to keep the fun factor consistent. All cars are useful and the same applies to the common weapons (clearly you cannot fight for long with a 3-shot bazooka). There are glitches with slow systems e.g. a world holes that swallow cars in front of the player rarely when the game is loading textures, though you can kill the glitching by dropping the screen resolution. Just use the VideoSetup.exe in the game directory and edit "VSync 0" into config.ini for decent performance. You can even edit in the 640 x 480 resolution that kills 90% of the glitching. Some of the glitching is hilarious. E.g. watching cars fall into a river because the game was loading bridge textures was madly hilarious. Dropping the resolution killed most of that glitch. I have played GTA4 and I would pick The Saboteur 10 times out of 10 . In comparison, there is no environmental destruction elements even in the much-heralded GTA 5 and I would pick this game even over that game. The game lives up to its name "The Saboteur" to an extreme extent to the point you can destroy massive train bridges and entire Nazi bases in it. In fact, "Saboteur" is what the Nazis refer to the player as.
