Definitely my favorite in this series

Rusty Lake: Roots is really where the series shine in my opinion, it weaves the games together storywise as it continues on with the same (or at least similiar) gameplay. To follow the Vanderboom family through the late 1800s to early 1900s is definitely an interesting and unexplored concept (in a game that is), something I'd love to see more in other games. The puzzles and their difficulties varies, nothing really gets repetitive even if you play in the same house on the same plot of land over and over. The characters and their actions tells a story as you play through the game, giving you motivation to continue to see where this tragedy ends. This is a top game in the series, which I recommend is a must for any Rusty Lake fans.

Morbid Vignettes

This entry took a different format: many little vignettes that were quicker to solve. It was neat how the story branched out in different directions, literally, even, as the puzzles appeared on a growing tree. The story is pretty dark and tragic, and I was surprised at a lot of what happened. Some of the puzzles are a little frustrating for how poorly explained they are and how ambiguous the potential solution could be, but that's at a minimum. It keeps with the Rusty Lake tradition of surreal horror and grim obligation, so if you liked the others, you'll probably like this, too.

Okay

Roots is like any other game in the series, it has a loose to non-existant plot, a myriad of puzzles, and a setting meant to shock the player, or at least gross them out. Puzzles are surprisingly easy and straightforward this time, since you don't have a lot to do or interact with in each level, making some levels last less than a minute. It makes the 33 levels seem justified, while at first I thought it was going to be a grind-fest. It does make levels blend together, and makes most of the game forgettable, especially since it consistently tries to shock you, taking away the effect it could have had in smaller doses. After all, all you really have to do is scour the small level for items to pick up, and think where you're supposed to use them. The game's puzzles also often rely on choosing a right sequence - whether the right password to open a suitcase, or the right item matched with the right person - things you can't solve strictly by using logic. You can either use brute force, which is sometimes easier, or look for the solution to the puzzle, which almost every level has pasted in it, in some sort or fashion. Occasionally you get a more obscure or difficult puzzle, which there's very little incentive to solve with logic. Especially since like always, trial and error can be quicker. Either that or use a walkthrough. None of the puzzles are very fun or rewarding to figure out.

Good... and some, well...

Caveat is the RL team are very gifted and extraordinary people. And now to the the game: as usually great simple graphic, story and consequence. The game has a therapeutic effect because solving the puzzles makes you feel guilty that you could solve it just to realize that you didn't invent the puzzle at a first time:) And seriously, it's very good and original puzzle point-and-click. Interesting, sometimes shocking. You are solving family line with some branches so if you are stuck with one branch, can go to the other to have some time to think. As always with RL all puzzles are non-arbitrary, 100% solvable, given enough think- through.

Sick and twisted game, which I adored!

I love it! The twisted tales, the bloody art, the gore puzzles, everything! I have been playing these games from the same developers and they always have just the right complexity level to keep me playing and the story is just fantastic, definitely my style.
