Description

RoadOut is a story-driven adventure that combines top down action-RPG elements with rubber-burning driving mechanics. Explore a vast post-apocalyptic world in your car, then battle your way through puzzle-filled dungeons on foot. With inspirations from The Legend of Zelda, GTA and Rock'n Roll Racing, RoadOut has a rich story full of surprises, missions and rip-roaring races.

After a great cataclysm, what's left is a post-post-apocalyptic world dominated by an A.I. with rebel groups that take refuge in a desert area known as The Dead Zone.

Claire survives in this world by executing black market contracts for local leaders involving delivery, sabotage and murder. The Dead Zone, now not so dead, is occupied by three rival factions: The Wasteheads, The SaibaKuran, and Order of the New Code.

While investigating her past, Claire uncovers strange evidence that links her existence to the origin of the A.I…

Explore the World on Wheels

The world is no longer the same. All that remains is The Dead Zone, a large artificial biome created to sustain a new era of humanity. Drive through The Dead Zone doing jobs, getting paid and running roughshod over the scum guarding the secrets of the world. Join factions, fight rival gangs, barter items and take up quests to earn clout while progressing Claire’s story.

Twin Stick Combat and Dungeon Exploration

Exit your ride and explore locations in the world of RoadOut on foot. Crush bandits with short and long range attacks, block with your shield, and recover using drugs that you’ve crafted on the way. Solve puzzles using fully rotatable stack sprite perspectives that look 2D, but are actually 3D.

Body Mods and Cybernetics

Craft new moves, weapons and drugs to survive. You can customize Claire with body mods, cybernetics and an intricate skill tree system. Upgrade her car to traverse different terrain and withstand the effects of weather, night and day.

Battle in Your Bitchin' Ride

Equipped with weapons and other tech, Claire’s car is your best friend against dangers in The Dead Zone. Hungry animals are ready to rip you apart. Murderous bandits will rob your lifeless corpse. Prepare for the worst with your car and its arsenal of weapons.

Race for Glory

The world may have come to an end, but who said we can't have fun? Ride or die in red-hot races to be the best on the post apocalyptic circuit. 10 tracks in multiple biomes, innumerable races, all of them equal measures deadly and glorious. Indulge in extra game modes such as destruction derby-style racing and twisted battle arena, all while roading out to a thumping synthwave soundtrack.

This is more of a first impression

So, I'm going to say I've not spent a ton of time with the game, but I do think I've mostly got the feel for it so I'm going to tell you why I recommend it, and if I do run into something that significantly changes my opinion, I can always edit the review if need be. First, I just saw this within a day or two of it coming out and I got super stoked for it because on the look of it, it reminds me of another game I recently started playing. (Neon Blight, if you want to know) This game is basically nothing like that, but I'm not disappointed even a little. This is kind of a Zelda game, but set in a post apocalyptic cyberpunk future and you are playing a currier, much like the game, Cloudpunk. And much like that game you are dragged into something pretty big. Unlike that game, you are not an insufferable chick and you will do more than just drive around about your problem. The kind of world map, is where you dive your car to get to locations such as dungeons. The driving I think is fine, I dig it, but it is pretty floaty. It reminds me of old school NES racers where the cars were all over the place. But it feels good here. I could be wrong, but I presume the world map is less an open world and more a well disguised system of corridors. Which is fine, and I could be wrong, but that's what it seems so far, and I bet it stays that way. I did run into creatures on my way to the first "dungeon" but I didn't have any upgrades yet so I just had to run. I know you will get to build up your car and add weapons and whatnot. While I do kind of dig the feel of the driving, I've not done it in combat yet. (EDIT: Combat while driving is not good, but it's not a deal breaker for me so far, didn't really change much else) The "dungeons" are where it really takes on that Zelda feel I was not in any way expecting. (it starts you out with melee stuff, but I know you get guns). It's got dead ends, puzzles, and weak points in the walls you can bust through to find secrets. It's all pretty standard, and that's ok. It is doing it's on thing, it not trying to be Zelda, just has a bit of that flavor to it. I just mean don't let that comparison put you off or get you too excited because it's KIND OF like Zelda, it's not even close to a 1 for 1. Where I think the game really shines is in the music and art departments. Now the world map, the dungeons, the character sprite you actually control. They are not amazing. I don't think they are bad, but nothing special at all. However, there are these story bits where it almost has a comic book style, but in pixel art. That stuff is beautiful. That is some very high quality pixel art. So this game covers the gambit between basic pixel art to some pretty breathtaking work in my opinion. How long is the game? I'm not sure. How is the story? I can't really tell you, but I can tell you it's not going to take itself too seriously. At the very least it's going to be somewhat self aware. I say give the game a try. It's only $15, and I think price of admission feels pretty good. I've played a little over a hour and a half so far (I said this is a first impression) and unless it ends in the next 2 or 3 hours, I'm feeling like I'll have gotten my money's worth.

Look at it and cry

Just look at the poster, than look what is in the game. And while we could start with the trashy pixelart, compare instead the drawing of the main character on the poster and the talky-screen. Look at it and cry. Then look at the pixelfart, and compare it to, I dunno, CrossCode. That has og-final fantasy/dragon quest level pixelart - and is still miles comfier to look at than whatever this C64/Atari era escapee is. and it's not like they couldn't do better. I mean look at the Body Mods and Cybernetics creen. That's nice and smooth. Why isn't the whole game like that? Look at it and cry.
