Good game but TERRIBLE start

My greatest problem with rising is that the melee combat is completely awful. You click in attack button. A 6541968416835 sec long 720º rotating overswing sword-cut animation starts, you get interrupted and the "ranged" weapons only works at melee range. The game is quite good AFTER you join in a faction like Guardians because armyslaying spells like firerain(Gothic 3) can be purchased few moments after you join in Guardians and you don't need to manage your mana pool, only the cooldown. To be honnest i recommend to play on EASY and have a companion until you join in a faction. Took 3 hours to me but after this 3 hours, the game 'starts'. Still not good as other games of the same company but the quests, the scenarios and graphics are amazing. To be honest i rather play in a medieval Europe than in a Caribbean scenario but this game is a exception. PB managed to put a pretty good and solid RPG in this scenario. Risen 3 is much better than Risen 1 or 2.

A Messy, Entertaining Journey

Risen 3 is a game with odd faults. Some are detrimental to the experience, such as the unbalanced combat or the game's bad first impression, yet most somehow contribute to the enjoyment of the game. Even the cutscenes can be enjoyed from a "so bad it's good" lense when they don't necessarily hit the right beats, the opening sequence being a shining example. Despite the early frustrations, there is a lot of fun to be had here. After about two to three hours and a few skill purchases, the game shifts from occasionally annoying to very fun. Your speed matches - and with time surpasses - enemies'. The sense of progression takes you from wimpy undead vassal to an incredibly strong force to be reckoned with. The skill progression could've been more convenient, but within a few clicks you tend to find who teaches what. The writing tends to shift from bad to amusing and back on a whim. One moment exposition is being delivered and the next your characters are trading funny quips. The voice acting is decent if at times peculiar. There are a few gimmicky sections, such as the ship battles, that are entertaining but are few and far between. They're completely removed from the stat system and, as such, are nice little diversions that pop up now and again. It outlines how the game doesn't truly take advantage of the pirate theme, though it gets close enough with the setting. Where the game truly shines is in how everything comes together so that you can explore these beautiful islands and be richly rewarded for it. The graphics aren't top tier but the amount of talent that went into the background and setting design is astonishing. The devil is in the details and there's plenty to be had here. This review makes the game sound like a mixed bag, but it is a very enjoyable journey. The jank tends to contribute to enjoyment and the rest of the faults aren't considerable enough to avoid reccomendation, especially in the face of the beautiful and expansive game world.

A great Piranha Bytes game

First of all, if you've played Risen 2 this game greatly improves on the combat system be it magic or melee and I actually had fun fighting monsters, also, it reintroduces the factions system. Another improvement from Risen 2 is the fact that now skills such as picklocking and pickpocketing can give some pretty good loot and feel more rewarding. I played on Ultimate(I think that was the name) difficulty and this is how I recommend playing for any old school Gothic fans, as this way you get to feel a little bit of the old school progression(not as well implemented as in the Gothic series but way better than in Risen 2). Another improvement in my eyes is represented by the world building and general design&feel of each island, now they truly feel different an they look pretty good. The storyline isn't memorable but it's ok, however there are a couple of characters that are quite unique and that you won't forget soon and the companions are pretty well made and give their input in quite a few situations. All in all it's a great Piranha Bytes title that I really enjoyed and spent over 40 hours in(first playthrough), definitelly worthy of a higher rating and a good buy.

Very Enjoyable, and down to Earth.

This is probably my favorite Gothic-like. If you don't know the gag, Piranha Bytes created a game called Gothic, which they recreated a million times under different names. However, I think Risen 3 is the most approachable to non-Gothic gamers It's both a serious and whimsical tale. On the one hand, not everybody is an unrelatable garishly dressed planet-saving weirdo. Often you' can identify with the more mundane NPCs. Their hopes, dreams, fears, failures, and successes, probably sound a lot like yours. No superheroes, just people like us. It's refreshing. It's got all the standard pirate tropes to the point of being ridiculously cliche. Buried treasure, rum, goofy pirate hats. But, it's clever pirate humor, offset by genuine serious moments. A good mix of both. Your character can be a snarky jerk, or offer personal sacrifices to the less fortunate. I thought I would dislike Risen 3 at first. It's the intro gameplay, the first 30 mins or so. The sandbox elements don't show up until that initial "tutorial" business is taken care of. I would say for a downside, the game introduces mandatory sea battles against sea monsters, and other pirates. These are the most tedious and boring aspects. But there's only about 5 events altogether, after which no more will ever show up again. Overall, I can easily recommend Risen 3.Many might not appreciate what it's going for. For some, it might seem mundane at times. But before long, you'll be a free-wheeling, swaggering legit pirate.

Gothic 1-3 then Risen 1-3

I started playing when Gothic 1 came out. Played it two times fully through. Then Gothic 2. Loved it as much. With Gothic 3 the magic of this kind of games was a bit lost to me. The feeling of "always the same" came up. But I finished Gothic 3 too. I didnt like Risen 1, because the feeling of beeing the same game in another graphical design was overwhelming. It's the only one of the six games witch I didn't finish. But I came back to Risen 2 and 3 several years after their initial release. I had enough time to forget how Gothic was played and enjoyed them very much !! Hope you will like them too ! Combats are hard, do not forget to save, or come back later when your stronger...
