The game is indeed nice, but some factors lead it to not have as much merit as the gothic series, which it should be the reboot, at first it is very noticeable the use of practically all the elements of the gothic series, which for a side is good and the other is less innovative, an example is the sound of some enemies and ambient sounds, something that bothers also is the extreme repetition of the characters, practically clones, the combat is ok, the beginning of the journey is exciting and captivating making with that the player focuses on the game, I was impressed by how small and the duration of the game, and the disappointing boss fight, nothing compared to the gothic series, we explicitly see the greed for money destroying the games, where to put money in the pockets quickly, they do the games in a hurry.
Anyway, I recommend the game, but don't expect an experience like Gothic and Gothic 2
Atmosphere, characters, story, progression - it's all great!
ENTER THE BUG
Combat was a bit clunky but initially fine. Then I upgraded my swords skills and got the ability to parry. However, the recent update has bugged the ability. It is now impossible to block without making a parry animation except if you block for 2+ seconds. Sometimes I do manage to initially skip the parry animation if I spam the attack button, but after one strike, my character makes the parry animation without me having even pressed the button. This left me open to attacks ALL THE TIME in quite unpredictable ways. Combat started to feel like a chore. I quit the game after realizing that this wasn't just me having a hard time figuring out the mechanics, as I read that other (veteran) players experienced the same on both this and the Steam version.
It doesn't only affect the sword skill, but also axes and staves.
Wouldn't recommend the game until this is fixed. If it's fixed, then the game would easily be a 4 or 5 from me (being about 15 hours in).
I will be relating a lot of this review to the first two Gothic games as they have very similar gameplay mechanics and this game was made by the same team. First off the game runs perfectly with only some minor frame rate drops when loading something in the distance and did not require any work around for me so that's a plus for optimisation, the second thing is that this game's voice acting is a lot better than gothic 1s and 2s voice acting, however most of the voice actors don't put a lot of empathises on their lines so sometimes they just sound bored, however there are some good voices mainly all the faction leaders like Mendoza or the don. Which is better than the lack luster voices of its predecessors now onto the gameplay the melee combat is clunky and frustrating there isn't much depth to it, mostly you just spam the attack button until the other thing dies however you can unlock counter attack moves if you invest some points into a certain weapon which does make combat a bit more exciting. However I do prefer the first games combat as you could chain together combos to kill your enemies quicker and with multiple enemies its very difficult and if their higher tier enemies it could be a nightmare. The story I feel is a bit less inspired than the first two games kill some threat to the world that sort of thing, it serves its purpose and there are some interesting characters along the way. The magic system is where I think this game shines as when you get the crystals after finishing the monastery quests the game becomes a lot less frustrating so a mage playthrough is quite fun and viable, in conclusion I think the game lives up to its predecessors in some ways and it is completely worth it for a fun 10 - 20 hour action rpg.
