A classic Piranha Bite style of game

PB introduce us to a new universe after the one explored in Gothic. The story is decently entertaining, nothing unforgettable but enough to keep you going, there are factions wich the player can ally with changing the course of some events e getting the gameplay fairly different between different playthrough. As usual for a PB game, the title is also pretty janky: stiff animations, ripetitive character model and voices, and still has some minor performance issues and bugs, the combat is a bit janky too, but is also challanging and deep enough give the player a good amount of choices in moves and magic spells. the progression system and world building are the biggest pros of this game, if you are not too sensitive to a bit of jankyness you will have fun. 3.5 stars for me. Played on lenovo ideapad 3 notebook Ryzen 5 3500U AMD vega 8 2gb v-ram 12 gb ram. worked fine (around 60fps) all maxed out, just some stuttering if v sync was enabled.

Great game with some weird bugs.

While this is no Gothic 1 or 2, It captures what made them great and delivers on a smaller island yet, full of life and adventure. This game is hard, especially by Chapter 4, I could also have set the difficulty to a lower value but I wouldn't be satisfied with it and supposedly, normal difficulty is the intended experience. The game is also filled with weird quirks and bugs that require you to quick save every couple of minutes which wasn't the most fun thing i've done while playing. Anyway, the story is serviceable but the last chapter was a slog. I would have been satisfied to fight the boss by the end of chapter 3 but having to go back and revisit repetitive temples and fight hordes of those enemies was a huge pain and I had to rely on companions to give me a hand. That being said, I enjoyed the game a lot and spent most of my time exploring the Island only stoping from time to time to seek a trainer. I like how you start as a fragile nobody but slowly climb the social ladder of your chosen faction in order to advance the various plots.

Promising but ultimately broken

Risen 1 is a game that dares to be merciless, but unfortunately, it also dares to be broken. At its core, there’s undeniable potential — a harsh yet rewarding world, an atmosphere thick with danger, and gameplay that challenges you to claw your way up from nothing. But all of this is buried beneath layers of bugs, unfinished mechanics, and glaring technical issues that sabotage the experience at every turn. The combat is punishing but fair… until it isn’t. Timing your hits and watching for opening in enemy defences is a great idea, but the controls are clunky and unresponsive. Some features appear bugged (like counter-block) It seems as though your character obeys your commands whenever he feels like. The dialogue feels stiff and disconnected, but you can overlook that if you’re drawn to gritty settings. What you can’t overlook, though, are the moments when the game simply refuses to function. I got cutscenes locking up because an NPC can’t find its way around my character, reloads leaving the camera stuck. In general, it feels like the game never should have left beta. There’s something heartbreaking about a game that shows you what it could have been but then asks you to suffer through its flaws to see it. Ultimately, I gave up, not because I don’t appreciate its ambition, but because no player should have to endure a broken experience for a glimmer of potential. Some might find the patience to push through; I didn’t, and I don’t regret walking away. If you’re curious about Risen 1, go in knowing this: the cracks run deep, and your enjoyment will depend on how much frustration you’re willing to tolerate.
