Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
Only 4 retro stars, since it won't be for everyone.
It is a kind of shooter in the vein of og doom.
Shoot Nazis, Cultist or whatever, they are evil.
Do it with submachine guns rocket launchers or better firebomb them,
while epic bit music is playing
I leave Civvie's XI review / play through, as is shows game and what to expect.
No need to watch all of it... or else

I must admit I was a little unsure before purchasing this game, but I’m glad that NightDive and Apogee are remaking these kind of games that I grew up on many years ago (the days when the classics are always remembered and playing on DOS and Windows 98).
This version however is probably the best way to play it without any issues, being stable and performs smoothly, with the original feel yet plenty of extras included - one I enjoy is changing the OST to the 2013 or classic 1994 version, along with having different songs whenever.
Gameplay wise, feels like Doom/Quake/Wolfenstein 3D with its large levels for finding secrets, keys and pickups. While it wasn’t as popular when released after Doom 1 & 2, there is something that has a retro feel and is enjoyable regardless. Various weapon choices and the enemy types make it interesting. Along with different traps to add that challenge, having those moments where you wonder: “Will I get through this tight spot with only a few hit points left?”
In terms of value, you are getting a great deal, even if it’s purchased full price, but nothing wrong getting it on sale, right? Length can vary, depending on the time you take exploring, not rushing with firefights and looking for that extra weapon or power-up.
Graphically, it is quite clever with how lighting and shadows work, and the muzzle flashes adds to the effort and details they put into it originally when first released all those years ago.
Thanks to GOG for bringing this fun, blast from the past and the achievements unlock quite easily on this game which makes it even better (I can confirm some can be also unlocked via the Level Editor, along with playing the episodes too).
Overall, it’s a game I recommend to those who enjoy boomer shooters, with a modern twist yet retain the classic feel.
I’m looking forward to what the future holds with Apogee games as they make great games. Worth it no question.
...or owners of the 2013 RotT? Or of both? Come on! The Q2 remaster came free to all owners of Q2! :(
Based on what I've seen from the reviews, it's a pretty solid remaster that has nifty features. You get:
- All the official RotT campaigns to this date, plus the demo, plus a whole new one, all playable from a single executable;
- Previously cut enemies were restored, including their female counterparts;
- Some of the spongier enemies (Monks) were nerfed for QoL (optional feature);
- The ability to switch between soundtracks and other sound files;
- Upscaled sprites that don't feel out of place;
- Various holiday-themed cosmetic modes that the original game came with (xmas, easter, whatever) all available from the get-go;
- The Very Hard difficulty bug was finally fixed;
- The ability to switch between classic and new HUDs;
- Proper widescreen support with fixed sprites;
- The sountrack was also upscaled, I think?
There are some downsides mentioned by other reviews on here (and elsewhere), but on the whole, it is, at this point in time, *the* ultimate edition of the classic RotT.
This remaster was treated with so much love and care. It was put in good hands and they delivered. Everything about this is great. Rise of the Triad is a goofy game you are sure to have plenty of fun with. And it has a map editor so you can make your own maps once you finish all the pre-made episodes.
Finally! I can play it on hardest difficulty! Original DOS version has some perfomans issues, due this I played the game only on normal difficulty.
For Remaster I push pluses for:
-2013 OST
- alternate sounds for weapons
- alternate map layout
- fast perfomanse (on my outdated tincan).
But - for that I can score some points? There is no scoreboard. But - I hope, developers add this feature.
