A buggy mess.

I'm sorry, but my nostalgia just couldn't save this game from itself. Rise of the Triad was my favourite game of all time when I was younger, and initially the fog of nostalgia kept me pushing on when playing this, but the more I played, the more the bugs drove me crazy, and it will do it to you too. That is, unless you can get past the nightmarish platforming that requires an accuracy that the controls just don't offer, the clipping errors, the checkpoint loading system (made obsolete with the implimentation of quick save after much user uproar, except the game defaults to checkpoint loading unless you specifically click to load a quick save every. time. you. die), and the poorly optimised Unreal engine graphics. Look, I don't completely hate it - it does look nice from certain angles, the music is fantastic, and the action is gory and fun a lot of the time, but after many many hours of trying to find the silver lining, the cons outweighed the pros for me. Not to mention, it's more than half a year after release and the most basic game-breaking clipping bugs still haven't been patched. Buy the original - even if it's dated, it's a superior experience.

Oh how I want to like this game

This was the FPS I waited for. Fast, challenging and not taking itsellf too seriously. Unfortunately the action is severely hampered by all sorts of bugs and the mind boggling decision to put in a checkpoint system instead of letting me quicksave. I don't mind the game not looking pretty (in fact it's part of it's appeal to me) but I mind the fact that I have yet to find graphics settings that run multiplayer in an acceptable fashion on my more than capable PC. Speaking of multiplayer I knew that I was getting mindless fun and explosions instead of Quake 3 Arena's very deliberate approach to jumping and shooting. But something just doesn't feel right here. Movements often seem blurry and barely comprehensible making fights with the comparatively slow killing standard weaponry less than enjoyable. Should the game receive some major bug fixes I'd be inclined to give it four stars based on it's single player alone but like this I have a hard time recommending Rise of the Triad no matter how much I love the concept.

Don't Bother

You may feel compelled by nostalgia to buy this game, but don't bother. It's buggy, choppy and feels like it was rushed out the door from start to finish. Buy the original if you haven't already, you'll save money and it will be far more enjoyable than this piece of trash.

Worst game ever

This game is a horrible failure. Bad performance issues on "high" settings (forget about running it on "ludicrous") and the game randomly crashing once in a while make this a unenjoyable mess that was butchered badly, and those are just the beginning of its phenomenal amount of problems. I would play it on medium settings but from medium to high is like night & day: medium looks like absolute garbage. And on top of that it still has poor performance issues on medium. It is a shame that this game did not get the attention that it deserves from a real company that knows what they are doing and not some hacks that don't know ♥♥♥♥ about making games like this company. The original ROTT was awesome. Play that, not this. God no not this. IGN's score of 4.3/10 for this was too generous and despite their improvements over the months, hardly anything has changed and it is still a horrible game and forever will be. Major, major disappointment for a reboot of such a classic game. Easily one of the top ten worst games I've ever played. Really bad performance issues out the ♥♥♥ because of poor optimization, game crashes, the worst cheap death system I've ever seen, some of the worst boss fights ever in a game, awful graphics, the worst jumping/hitting jump pad controls ever put in a fps, horrible AI, and poor level design bury this so far in the ground it can never be dug back up and never should be. 0/10

First Person Frustration

I like classic FPS and the original game. What I don't like is insta-death obstacle courses with console-style checkpoints. Or getting stuck in a room for 10 minutes because the door that should have automatically opened didn't trigger. Or inconsistent behaviour, a fireball from a wall does 10 percent damage, a fire jet from a floor does 90-100%. Or unintuitive level design like needing to jump from the rear of a platform in order to land on the next one when every other game I've played for 30 years has you jumping near the edge. I wanted to like it but after reaching what I can only assume is an obstacle course level (E2M2), no thanks. I have more games than time and this doesn't pass the bar.
