Shallow, uninspired
It is the first time i ever put a 1 star on a game... but i'm afraid it reflects the general interest of this one ! Lets be clear: the only quality value in this game are in the close up combat screens (drawn background + animated pixel arts characters) and the hand drawn character designs in the team select screen, and... and that's it ! Gameplay is simplistic, shallow, and lacks of any depth... Hear me, i'm not even comparing this game to other modern indies, i simply put it in competition with retro old games it claim to be inspired and to be the heir to ! There were more smart ideas, varieties in battle, and solid mechanics, compelling story in Shining Force 1, and i said 1 ! On Sega Genesis/Megadrive... It's as if this game disregarded each and any evolution, progress, improvement ever made in the turn based tactical genre in the last 3 decades to serve a product inferior to the titles of the 80ies : You cannot propose a game like that in 2021 after other devs managed to pull of an excellent "tribute" to same inspirations like Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark (clearly inspired by the Ogre serie) It's so blatantly poor that i wonder if i could treat the store page's words as a blatant scam, tbh ! If you have 15 bucks to spare, dont waste them on this game for your own good; hell, you could rather purchase the sega classics collection that is on steam and that has first Shining Force inside, instead, and yet have better time and fun ! I know, developping a game is hard and so on, and i feel sorry for the devs but... what did you have in mind exactly ? i really would like to know what kind of game you had in your minds and dreams, and how it could devolve from that into this final form instead ? For i won't quesiton the sincerity of the intents and passion behind the project, but as a end-customer, the product lacks in every department !
