RimWorld is a story generator. It’s designed to co-author tragic, twisted, and triumphant stories about imprisoned pirates, desperate colonists, starvation and survival. It works by controlling the “random” events that the world throws at you. Every thunderstorm, pirate raid, and traveling salesman is a card dealt into your story by the AI Storyteller. There are several storytellers to choose from. Randy Random does crazy stuff, Cassandra Classic goes for rising tension, and Phoebe Chillax likes to relax.

Your colonists are not professional settlers – they’re crash-landed survivors from a passenger liner destroyed in orbit. You can end up with a nobleman, an accountant, and a housewife. You’ll acquire more colonists by capturing them in combat and turning them to your side, buying them from slave traders, or taking in refugees. So your colony will always be a motley crew.

Each person’s background is tracked and affects how they play. A nobleman will be great at social skills (recruiting prisoners, negotiating trade prices), but refuse to do physical work. A farm oaf knows how to grow food by long experience, but cannot do research. A nerdy scientist is great at research, but cannot do social tasks at all. A genetically engineered assassin can do nothing but kill – but he does that very well.

Colonists develop - and destroy - relationships. Each has an opinion of the others, which determines whether they'll become lovers, marry, cheat, or fight. Perhaps your two best colonists are happily married - until one of them falls for the dashing surgeon who saved her from a gunshot wound.

The game generates a whole planet from pole to equator. You choose whether to land your crash pods in a cold northern tundra, a parched desert flat, a temperate forest, or a steaming equatorial jungle. Different areas have different animals, plants, diseases, temperatures, rainfall, mineral resources, and terrain. These challenges of surviving in a disease-infested, choking jungle are very different from those in a parched desert wasteland or a frozen tundra with a two-month growing season.

Travel across the planet. You're not stuck in one place. You can form a caravan of people, animals, and prisoners. Rescue kidnapped former allies from pirate outposts, attend peace talks, trade with other factions, attack enemy colonies, and complete other quests. You can even pack up your entire colony and move to a new place. You can use rocket-powered transport pods to travel faster.

You can tame and train animals. Lovable pets will cheer up sad colonists. Farm animals can be worked, milked, and sheared. Attack beasts can be released upon your enemies. There are many animals - cats, labrador retrievers, grizzly bears, camels, cougars, chinchillas, chickens, and exotic alien-like lifeforms.

People in RimWorld constantly observe their situation and surroundings in order to decide how to feel at any given moment. They respond to hunger and fatigue, witnessing death, disrespectfully unburied corpses, being wounded, being left in darkness, getting packed into cramped environments, sleeping outside or in the same room as others, and many other situations. If they're too stressed, they might lash out or break down.

Wounds, infections, prosthetics, and chronic conditions are tracked on each body part and affect characters' capacities. Eye injuries make it hard to shoot or do surgery. Wounded legs slow people down. Hands, brain, mouth, heart, liver, kidneys, stomach, feet, fingers, toes, and more can all be wounded, diseased, or missing, and all have logical in-game effects. And other species have their own body layouts - take off a deer's leg, and it can still hobble on the other three. Take off a rhino's horn, and it's much less dangerous.

You can repair body parts with prosthetics ranging from primitive to transcendent. A peg leg will get Joe Colonist walking after an unfortunate incident with a rhinoceros, but he'll still be quite slow. Buy an expensive bionic leg from a trader the next year, and Joe becomes a superhuman runner. You can even extract, sell, buy, and transplant internal organs.

Just awful

Impossible to play without a massive commitment on your part. The learning curve is a sheer cliff-face in its steepness. Literal shotgun-blast of game mechanics in your face in the tutorial alone, which is so far from enough to prepare you that a lone guinea pig will destroy your colonists in one week's time. Game is hot garbage, and I consider my purchase to be one of my life's greatest regrets. Actually I take that back, it's ice-cold garbage. Nice music though.

"War Crimes Simulator"

Seems like this game gets glowing reviews from trashy people who like cannibalism. The publisher is being a little disingenuous when they bill this game as a story generator. The game has a list of maybe twelve events that it randomly spits out at you. You play the game once and suddenly you've seen everything it has to throw at you. The developer wants EA The Sims levels of financial investment for a game that looks like it would have been passed around for free in the '90s. It's a playable game, but it's just so obvious that all of the glowing praise is coming from the cannibals who are just excited that someone is finally making video games for their interests. I look forward to finding a nice clone of this game made by someone who doesn't think slavery is a fun gameplay feature.

Do you like cooking rice meals?

oh FUCK I love cooking rice meals. I love telling my people to wake up, cook some rice meals, then plant more rice and harvest that rice...oh, time to eat a rice meal after all that work. FUCK YEAH THAT MEANS I GET TO COOK MORE RICE MEALS. Then I tell them to cook more rice meals and they get tired from cooking all those rice meals so it's time to eat another rice meal...ooooooohhh shit you know what time it is??? IT'S TIME TO COOK MORE RICE MEALS-oh darn, actually it's time to go to bed, but I'ma get a few late night rice meals in before passing out because I just LOVE IT SO MUCH. Then my people wake up and aw HELLLLLLLL yeahhhhhh let's cook up some RICE MEALS BAYBAYYYYYY. Oh cool a new person showed up, I wonder if they like cooking rice meals? HAHAHA of course they do, and even if they don't that's what they're going to be doing for the rest of their life. Exploring? Aint no one got time for that with all the rice meals that have to be cooked. Adventure? Bet your ass we're venturing to cook some rice meals so we can work to get the supplies to cook more rice meals. "Shouldn't we try doing something besides cooking rice meals?" Oh, fascinating question Einstein, why don't you think about it more in the CORPSE PILE AFTER I MURDER YOU. More rice meals for the rest of us. Man all that stress really works up an appetite; better eat a rice meal before bed. Now rest up. Those rice meals aren't going to cook themselves you know. Wake up and cook some more rice meals. DO YOU KNOW WE WOULD BE FUCKING DEAD IF NOT FOR OUR RICE MEALS? I don't CARE if it's a never ending cyclical hell of constantly cooking rice meals to be able to work for more rice meals that grotesquely mirrors the futility of modern existence. It's a cyclical hell of RICE MEALS and I FUCKING LOVE COOKING RICE MEALS. Rice meals. RICE MEALS. RICEMEALS. Or ice some eels. Worrisome eels. Murray's muse. Morris mules. More rise my ales...more...rise....males.......MORE RICE MEALS 10/10 epic sci-fi adventures

Callous humour is ok, but bigotry?

I bought this game without any foreknowledge of the now well-known controversies over the game's depictions of gender, sexuality, and relationships. But the problems started to present themselves to me pretty quickly, and I wasn't surprised by the time I read about them on Polygon, RockPaperShotgun, and in the developer's own account. I'm chill enough to ignore the old-person attitudes to gender and sexuality if they're just left out, though I think it's a loss to a game if it fails to reflect the real world in ways that add depth. I was disappointed that Rimworld already lacks representation regarding gender: this is a big daft, as there's no functional difference in how 'pawns' can behave outside of relationships based on gender, but ok. It's outdated, but It's no different from Starbound, Stardew Valley, etcetera, in this regard. But then I note some really.. incel? tropes in the pawns' relationships. It's always the male pawns who hit on the female ones, and they get upset if they're 'rebuffed', a factor that can lead to violent outbursts or fights. Relationships can only be represented monogamously in double-beds, but due to the one-way dynamic of relationships and some old-person ideas about male/female attractiveness, older male pawns are more likely to attract overlapping 'harems' of younger female partners. Female pawns are largely there to just be 'collected' into dysfunctional dynamics where one gets to sleep with the male and the others get jealous and depressed. Females are also all bisexual, though they rarely proposition relationships anyway. The rare trait 'gay' only applies to males, and is essentially a disadvantage as it tends to lead to constant rebuffal from 'straight' males. Learning that this was deliberate, to reflect the biases of the developer, makes it kinda sad. The sex and relationship dynamic doesn't add much to the game and it could have been left out. Bigotry isn't fun or funny, even when OTT, and it made the game gross. Refund!

Gave me brain cancer.

I have no clue as of why so much overzealous embellished reviews that glorify this game for what it isn't than what it truly is at its core. If you like the game Prison Architect then you will most likely enjoy this -- however I was roped into false reviews and boasting by so called "friends" that I have to buy this game is it without a doubt the best game ever and if you love "The Sims" games buying this is a no brainerrr!@!@! No this is nothing like The Sims or a top-side-down advanced version to Minecraft/The Sims. What this game really is: Human Resource job simulator and is nothing more than frustration that leads to castrating chores that will all most kill every brain cell. This game is as exciting as listing to that orange with a toupee of a president we have in the oval office talking about the Coronavirus; exhuasting and mind numbing, pain staking, soul sucking experience.
