Return to Monkey Island is an unexpected, thrilling return of series creator Ron Gilbert that continues the story of the legendary adventure games The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge developed in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games.

It’s been many years since Guybrush Threepwood was last locked in a battle of wits with his nemesis, the zombie pirate LeChuck. His true love, Elaine Marley, has turned her focus away from governing and Guybrush himself is adrift and unfulfilled, having never found the Secret of Monkey Island. Hip, young pirate leaders led by Captain Madison have shuffled the old guard from power, Melee Island has taken a turn for the worse, and famed businessman Stan has been imprisoned for ‘marketing-related crimes’.

Banter with old friends and new faces on familiar islands now under dangerous new leadership. Then, take to the high seas and explore the new and unknown as you work your way out of tough predicaments. Clever puzzles, bizarre situations, and devastating ripostes are all that stand between Guybrush and glory.

Return to Point & Click Swashbuckling

Bringing classic point and click gameplay to the modern-day, intrepid pirates will solve puzzles and explore the islands with a clever evolution of classic adventure game controls. Context-sensitive interactions, reactive dialog trees, and an easy-to-use inventory system make pirating a breeze.

Embark on Archipelago Adventures

Navigate the sometimes-friendly confines of Melee Island, a familiar place that finds itself under new management by leaders who have put the squeeze on old friends and new faces. Venture out into uncharted lands like the aptly named Terror Island and the chilling outposts of Brrr Muda to make allies and enemies alike.

Created by a Legendary Crew

The new chapter in the Monkey Island series marks the return of the iconic series’ creator Ron Gilbert, joined by game co-writer Dave Grossman, art director Rex Crowle (Knights & Bikes, Tearaway) and composers Peter McConnell, Michael Land, and Clint Bajakian (Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge).

A Lot of Fun

I had a lot of fun with this entry to the series. I started watching a stream of it, and decided to buy it immediately. Personally this is my favorite art style of the entire series, and would love to see more entries in the same style. I wasn't the biggest fan of the ending, but the rest of the game was very entertaining.

You can(not) return to Monkey Island

Well having played it I can say with confidence that this game... Is not bad. Is it good though? Well that depends on you and how much nostalgia you feel towards the original games. In my case it's a lot and that helped elevate the game in my eyes thanks to the many allusions to former entries. But as its own, the game it was ok. Not great, not terrible. But it's still a Monkey Island game with everything that implies, and I can't help but love it. There is however one point of contention, Some have described the lack of moon logic in the puzzles, as a positive thing. I have to disagree, I feel that the quirky, nonsensical solutions to some of the puzzles, are very much part of the series' identity and of what makes it charming, and I think that doing away with them entirely is a disservice to it. I also feel obligated to discuss the ending. By the time I played the game, it had been out for a few weeks so I had fair warning from spoiler free reviews about it. So when I finally saw it, I was fully prepared and felt no surprise whatsoever. Yet, even with this advance warning I still felt disappointed. I accepted it with resignation and stoicism. That this was all we were going to get. After all, Gilbert does have a long history of doing this same thing to many of his games'. Then I read the developer's note that unlocks after completing the game and... it all sort of clicked together. The core concept of this game and Guybrush's journey reflects Gilbert's own personal experiences and career as a game developer. There is a lot of meta going on here, when you look at it from that perspective, starting even with the title, Just like Guybrush can't go back to his glory days, you can never truly return to Monkey Island or that magical feeling when you first played this game all those years ago. It's not a satisfying ending but it is an ending. As a swan song for the series, it might not be great, but it's good enough.

The perfect point-and-click adventure

This is the way to make a perfect point-and-click adventure these days. Recap of the recent events when loading a game, great dialogues, humor, incredible graphics - even though I am a fan of old school hand drawn adventure games myself, I loved the graphic style of this game. I truly hope this was not our last trip to the Monkey Island! If you find only the graphic style weird - give it a chance. You will not be disappointed.

Hearkens to the halcyon days of the 90's

Wow, this brings back so many memories of fun point and click adventures from the 90's like Sierra and Lucas Arts during their peak. I had heard people were kicking up a stink over the new art style vs the old games, but I liked it. The actual gameplay and puzzles were fairly fun, nothing too difficult to rack the brain over. The humour and storyline were so much fun. I really hope they work on some new stuff. I will definitely be in for more!
