Really fun. Has some difficulty spikes as to be expected with old school shooters. It's more satisfying than the new games by Machinegames, in my opinion. Graphics have aged well, mechanics are still solid and storytelling reminds me of Raiders of the Lost Ark in a good way. Took me about 8 hours to clear the game.
A helpful tip:
First get the RtCW Unofficial Patch by Knightmare. Then, be sure to go into your config file, find and change this value: /r_primitives 2
For some reason the game still has frame drops on modern systems when trying to max it out, but the above fixes that. The patch is for proper widescreen scaling. There is something called the Venom mod out there, but it may alter the OG experience too much, which still stands fine on its own.
I did my first pc-gaming with the original Wolfenstein game and I remember this was very popular as a multiplayer game at the time it came out, so I picked it up at some point, but never got around to actually play it until now. If you are like me and need a dose of old school action, then you will still enjoy playing this. If you are not, then I cannot really imagine you would want to buy it.
I call this old-school and by that I mean:
-the graphics and animations are basic. it does what it needs to do, nothing to stop and stare at.
-the game will throw some curve balls and kill you. sometimes in an annoying way, but it has an up-side because if you somehow do cheat your "cheated death" and are down to your last health, having to make every shot count, then I would say that is where the best fps experience is. many games now are too forgiving.
-it doesn't take itself too seriously and you can at times clearly tell that they enjoyed making this
-they did their best to offer a lengthy single player campaign.
What you get is action in a WWII setting. There are stealth sections but even there you will just be killing, just needs a bit of planning (and luck) because it's “game over” if anyone can sound an alarm. There is a story; even the in-game characters will tell you that they don't really know how it makes sense but it does bring the action to different locations, some of which are very well done. There are many weapons to choose from. There are secret stashes. The sounds are fitting and music that adds and adjusts to the excitement level. So there is plenty to enjoy.
My only issues with the game is that it gets a bit silly towards the end in a couple of ways. some of the levels felt like they didn’t need to be there, the story gets a bit too silly, enemies will get a bit too eager too stay alive and have no intention to ever miss a shot (funnily enough the final boss is the opposite). None of it really ruins the fun but when it was done, I was also done.
I drown in my own tears after hundreds of thousands hours played in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territor and now trying this. This is the game from which my favorite online shooter originated. I pay a tribute to the authors.
When it comes to the game nowadays the levels seem to be so empty and simple. Hovewer I quite enjoy it. I guess it's a choice only for Wolfenstein series fan.
