An Insurance Adventure with Minimal Color
In 1802, the merchant ship Obra Dinn set out from London for the Orient with over 200 tons of trade goods. Six months later it hadn't met its rendezvous point at the Cape of Good Hope and was declared lost at sea.
Early this morning of October 14th, 1807, the Obra Dinn drifted into port at Falmouth with damaged sails and no visible crew. As insurance investigator for the East India Company's London Office, dispatch immediately to Falmouth, find means to board the ship, and prepare an assessment of damages.
Return of the Obra Dinn is a first-person mystery adventure based on exploration and logical deduction.
I am not really into detective/adventure type of games, but I was immediately spellbound by the Return of the Obra Dinn. The visuals, the music (absolutely amazing), how characters that you never see in motion can become real people where you care about their fates.
An absolute piece of art. Also a lot of fun to play.
After Papers, Please, I had to buy this game as soon as it came available, and I was not disappointed one bit.
It is a very different style of game -- it is basically a variety of point & click adventure, with no test of eye/hand coordination. It is also probably the best detective game I have ever played. The gameplay is relatively simple -- one by one you must identify every decedent on a derelict ship, and how they died, by carefully scouring for visual and auditory clues (you have a limited ability to replay the last moment's of each decedent's life). Simple, but very effective. Probably my only 2 complaints are (1) if you wanted to, you could force a solution by brute trial-and-error (so don't do that!), and (2) there is limited replay value once you know the solutions (so wait a couple years and then play it through again...I did!).
This wouldn't be enough if the story were weak...but the story is very, very good. And it is helped along by the strong voice acting and the intriguing retro-style b&w graphics, enjoyed from a first-person view that immerses you.
This game really is on par with Papers, Please, and I can't wait to see Pope's next game.
A supernatural mystery at sea, and you have to put it all together through death scenes, evaluate the relationships of the characters and pay attention to the details, which can be a challenge on itself with 1 bit graphics, but don't believe for a second I hold the grapphics againts it, on the contrary, it's all part of the soul of the game, alongside the amazing music and voice acting.
I was enthralled by it and spent like 8 hours straight playing it, I have to admit I brute forced some of the names because they don't get remotely mentioned ever, but it was fun.
The only thing that could make it better would be if after achieving all the fates you could watch all the scenes in chronological order in the main menu or the journal.
I hope we can see another game in the series some day.
This game is the best indie game of the year, even more than that, it's one of the best games of 2018. It's a masterpiece. While graphics may deter people from playing it, it wasn't the case for me.
I enjoyed various awesome video settings. Gameplay is incredible, the game feels like a real investigation. Story is engaging and mysterious.
It's so good you're doing yourself a disfavor not playing it right now. It cost only 20 bucks. Bear in mind this game was made by one man. The whole design: music, sound, graphics, story - is all his.
Took me about 11 hours to solve everything and enjoying every little detail in the game. I can't recommend it enough. Lucas Pope is an auteur of video games. Buy this game and experience it yourself.
