Major mistakes were made...

Okay, where to begin? This is a small one or two-man company, and it is painfully apparent they are still learning this is a BUSINESS when you charge money, not their own personal hobby anymore. Visuals, music, and ambience are WONDERFUL! Game is HORRIBLY overpriced. You are looking at ~3 hours of playtime, nonsensical design, unengaging combat. I bought the game for exploration and the drones (I LOVE drones). Drones cannot be replaced or built, last for 10 seconds, and die when taking ANY damage. This means they are no help against bosses or MOST OF THE COMMON ENEMIES! I do enjoy the fact enemies DO respawn if you walk offscreen. Needed for farms. THERE IS NO MOUSE SUPPORT!!! Nope, not even in the menus! Almost unforgivable, in my opinion, especially in a $20 game! And my first games were on an Apple II... I honestly cannot recommend this game. I understand why things are the way they are, but this is a $5 game at most. I don't care how enchanting the retro visuals, audio, and whatnot are. If you cannot even program basic mouse support or BUILD ENOUGH OF A GAME TO JUSTIFY THE PURCHASE PRICE, keep developing it for another year and reveal it when you actually have something to offer. Charging money is a tricky thing - it DRASTICALLY increases expectations. Expectations this game has failed. "A" for effort, visual style, music, and ambience. "C" on actual game design functionality, combat, menus, and so forth. "F" on length, controls, pricing, pickups, weapon and item variation, weapon and item usefulness, etc. This game simply wasn't ready for release. Now the dev is on Steam saying "well, I WANT to add in New Game + and more stuff, but if sales aren't so good and I don't have money, I guess I'll just have to move on to other projects..." Dude, who the hell will want your other projects if you abandon THIS one? Please, PLEASE research "Kickstarter game fraud". That is the kind of stench you DON'T come back from. Not without a lot of pain!

Nice

It's interesting, fairly simple side-scrolling shooter/hack&slash. Quite easy, which is pleasant, except Some Bosses are infuriating difficulty spikes. Love the art style, reminds me of the old Blade Warrior. Unfortunately easy to get lost and not know where to go. And picking this up after a period of not playing makes that worse.

An Amazing Game

When I first bought Return, I didn't expect much from it besides its unique art style and simple combat mechanics. After about thirty minutes in, I had completely fallen in love with the game. The first thing I want to talk about is the spectacular atmosphere. From the music to the visuals, every second of this game looks good. And the music is very relaxing at times since it really plays into being ambient. Another thing that I personally enjoyed was the difficulty. I personally like that items don't respawn in the shop because it adds more skill to how and when you will use them. The game's main challenge are the bosses, and there are quite a few of them. I enjoyed most bosses and there are even some I wish I could replay. The combat in Return is very similar to others, since it mostly revolves around dodging the enemies's attacks. My only two negatives about the game are its price and length. Return goes on sale quite often so its usually around ten dollars. And although it is a short game, (my play through was around five hours) it delivers a great story and world that I will definitely remember. I had an amazing time, and of you're looking for a good rainy weekend game, give Return a try.

Pleasant atmosphere, tedious play.

There’s a lot to say about “Return,” but I’ll keep it short: The atmosphere is really pleasant, but the game is a pain. Unfortunately, the game’s balance is off—it’s either too easy or too hard. It could be fun, but the easy levels feel repetitive; you just want to get to the next boss. You spend your time trying to find your way, but fortunately the game isn’t very long, and I recommend playing it all at once so you can remember your path and avoid getting completely lost next time. There’s still a lot more to say, but I’ll stop here. I played “Return” on Steam and wanted to buy it on GOG, but I was disappointed by the game—and by its developer, who canceled the Linux version because Steam doesn’t need one. To make up for all the publicity I gave it before its release, I wanted to share my opinion.
