Resonance is a joint effort between Wadjet Eye and xii games. It's been five years in the making, and it's without-a-doubt their longest and most ambitious game to date. This gem is made by gamers for gamers, and you can clearly see that in almost every element of the game. From the polished and intuitive interface, through well balanced puzzles, all the way to the fun and gripping story, you can tell that xii games knows how to get the job done right. So if you are an old-school adventure game fan then this game should scratch all the old-skool gaming itches you’ve been feeling while delighting you with its innovations and story.
Twisting and riveting storyline that you experience from four different perspectives as freely swap between all the main characters to solve puzzles and progress through the game.
Unique long-term and short-term memory system that creates new possibilities to solve puzzles and uncover mysteries.
Intuitive interface makes for one of the best adventure gaming experiences you’ll get.
All the love and care you’ve come to expect from the developer of such classics as Gemini Rue and the Blackwell series.
Especially the added conversation options when I researched the environment and found out new details, make this adventure special to me. Good to very good puzzles, story, graphics, sound and voice acting. I can recommend this game to anyone who likes exciting stories and classical adventure style.
I really liked Resonance, there isn't one Wadjet Eye game that I haven't liked. The story and setting are simpler than Gemini Rue, for example, but it has a really great system of puzzles and very wide range of them. You can control up to 4 characters in one moment and the developers managed to get them to interact in some very cool ways. Maybe there could have been some improvements regarding usability: a shortcut to switch characters and one to return the map come to mind.
I'm not an adventure game player, and bought Resonance on a whim. It was a decision I don't regret.
While the game was fun and the story was entertaining, what I really enjoyed was the commentary, which would show up either as a clickable tile in a scene, or would be injected into the characters conversations. These little behind the scenes glimpses into how the game was made or why certain decisions were made added a new dimension that you often don't get in video games. I found the commentary by those responsible for the game very insightful, and actually enriched the experience a great deal.
The game play mechanics involving multiple characters, and the novel use of Short Term Memory and Long Term Memory elements which could be interacted with in much the same way as any other item in your inventory, were things I hadn't seen before. Maybe this is actually pretty common in adventure games, but I though the implementation in Resonance was neat.
I also appreciated the fact that some hard core puzzles could be skipped by those who maybe just wanted to keep the story moving. I wasn't terribly interested in solving complex logic puzzles, and having the ability to just walk around the other side of the building instead of spending the next 30 minutes unlocking a door was very welcome.
An amazing retro style game that actually feels fresh, with 4 simultaneously playable characters, puzzles with multiple solutions a great plot with really surprising twists and 2.5 extremely satisfying endings. The short-memory, long-memory inventory system is ground-breaking and makes the dialogue system feel more genuinely interactive. Definitely one of the best adventure games of 2012. My only nitpick: it's about 10 hours long, which, being so good, feels too short.
