Description

In a forgotten galaxy full of strange planets, a lone explorer crash-lands on one with an ancient alien secret. Venture forth from the shipwreck across a harsh, unpredictable, procedurally generated world. Harvest food and make campfires to stay alive. Craft science-fiction survival tools like teleporters and mining devices. Unearth alien technology capable of repairing the ship. Hunger, cosmic storms, hostile plant life and the mysterious ooze are among the many obstacles you'll face.

You won't be alone! PDB (a snarky floating Personal Disaster Bot) will follow and assist you along the way. Sometimes. PDB also helps you discover the hidden lore, revealing the history of the planet as you explore deeper and deeper, assuming you can survive!

OrangePixel’s uniquely designed Nature Engine generates 1000's of planets from a vast set of environment-based rules, then drops explorers on a world brimming with potential. If a planet orbits close to the sun, intense heat, high winds, and sparse vegetation will pose a set of challenges wildly different from other worlds. Further from the sun, long nights make stamina easier to maintain, but reduced solar power turns every suit function—like scanning the planet—into a critical decision.

Residual welcomes players to a non-violent survival experience with limitless possibilities and no traditional combat. Jump and descend through colorful, highly detailed pixel art evoking classic 2D platformers. Solve light puzzles to reveal secrets of a long-lost civilization. Select a male, female, or non-binary protagonist, customize survival parameters like how fast time advances, and race to repair the ship, dig up ancient secrets, or collect data entries on hundreds of undiscovered objects.

Engaging and chill at once

At first glance, I believe that Residual might not look like something you'd necessarily wanna play. I mean, it's gorgeous, the music is legit, and your companion is somewhere between funny and annoying (probably exactly as intended). What I'm talking about is the base premise of the game: survival platformer without combat. That sounds like a super awkward thing, right? Yeah, indeed it does. So for me, it was all the more fascinating that the game keeps sucking me in. After many failed attempts, I finally managed to finish the first planet. And oh boy, am I looking forward to continue ;-) I really enjoy the part where you receive very little hand-holding and have to figure things out by yourself. From my point of view, there are several layers of exploration involved which intermingle quite nicely. One, you explore the planet itself. Two, you explore how to do stuff and how to interact with the world. Three, you explore that which "links" the different planets you visit (trying not to spoiler). Let's be frank, at launch, the game had quite a bit of bugs. Quite some of them are gone now (1.1.5b), but there still are some rather awkward bugs around (with some I'm unsure whether they are supposed to form part of the gameplay). Also, the dev is much better to be reached via steam and not so much via gog which sucks a bit. On the flipside, he is very responsive and rather quick to fix the bugs you mention in the discussions. I really want to emphasize what this game accomplishes marvellously: starting from a rather awkward base premise, it manages to captivate through the different layers of exploration which unfold as you play. While the game is engaging - you always have something to do -, it retains a certain chill-ness which makes it perfectly suited both for ambitious and laid-back gamers. Finally, understand that this game is unlike any game I've played before. I've played survival games, I've played platformers. But not in such a wonderfully awkward combo <3

updated 2025 review after patch

(original review + gog team comment below) while the game is now up-to-date, it's still impossible to recommend. manual saving anytime is possible but there is absolutely no autosave, making things unnecessarily tedious. a game like this should save after every day, every item picked up, every skill or recipe unlocked, etc. it's also incredibly crash-prone, which would be bad enough on its own and unacceptable with the subpar save system. am I supposed to manually save every 5 seconds to avoid losing progress? and these are on top of terrible controls and ui and the dev's attitude mentioned below. --- This review might be outdated, as the version of the game has since changed - GOG Team. the steam version has been getting updates every now and then, the latest at the time of writing on apr 2, 2024, but the gog version is stuck on 1.1.5 from 2021. please don't give any money to this scummy developer, here or on other platforms.

almost good

Brings clever and interesting ideas. if only you could get past the annoying bits. That ever-present voice a UX/UI that almost feels like a first draft it goes along with the controls For that, it fails to lock me in any longer.

One bad mechanic.

Teleporter recall near bed is too easy to hit and ruined the progressions of a fun lil platforming game. Clever atmosphere!
