Many memories return playing this. Seeing its pixel glory just feels me with joy and the music just ads to the atmosphere and the unsettling encounters.
While the remake was good, this one is still better.
I was born a year after this game came out, however after playing the remake as well as the remaster of the first game I knew I had to give this version a go as a way of paying respects to the classics.
Can't really say I don't see where the magic comes from, the tension of having to go back and forth collecting pieces of the puzzles and never being too sure if that will do the trick, the brilliant use of so little ammo and healing items that make you feel only so powerful, and those goddamn nightmare inducing sewer spiders that I had no idea were even in the original until one started booking it right toward me.
An absolute classic for many a reason, if you can ignore the PS1 graphics and at times cheesy dialogue, this is a must play for anyone into survival horror.
I've loved RE ever since I was a kid, and have played every main title release since REmake came out of GC. I never had the chance to experience any of these original games, but now having played RE1 and this I can see why they are as loved as they are. I'm not playing these out of obligation anymore, i'm playing because they are genuinely great and are unique from their remake counterparts. I'm glad that these are now so easy to aquire and play, and I hope capcom goes this direction with more of their old titles.
There also has to be a huge commendation to GOG. All I had to do was start the game and plug in my controller and I could instantly hop into one of the scenarios. Minor improvements and quality of life additions make it a pretty faithful port and the definitive way to play this release. I think 10 dollars is pretty fair for what you are getting, but I have no doubt that RE3 will be just as solid and recommend just buying the collection.
If you are fan of classic RE2 this game will let you dream. The best money value for this masterpiece, complete in all its versions (standard and japanese) with some nice extra features.
Resident Evil 2, originally released in 1998 for the PlayStation, is without a doubt one of the most iconic games of the 32-bit era. Developed by Capcom, the title not only solidified the franchise as a benchmark in the survival horror genre, but also raised the bar in terms of narrative, gameplay, and atmosphere. Even today, it's remembered as a true masterpiece.
Gameplay – Tension and strategy at every step
The gameplay in Resident Evil 2 is fantastic because it offers a unique mix of action, exploration, and resource management. The constant feeling of vulnerability — with limited ammo, clever puzzles, and relentless enemies — creates a tension-filled experience from start to finish. The "tank controls," while awkward for newcomers, are essential to the game's identity, demanding precision and caution. Additionally, the "Scenario A and B" system for protagonists Leon and Claire adds brilliant replay value, showing different sides of the story depending on the play order.
Graphics – Dark, detailed, and atmospheric
For its time, Resident Evil 2 featured impressive visuals. The pre-rendered backgrounds were rich in detail and atmosphere, whether in the dark hallways of the police station or the eerie Umbrella laboratories. The use of lighting, shadows, and creature design reinforced the game's feeling of dread and mystery. Despite technical limitations, it effectively conveyed emotion and fear through its visuals.
Story – Resident Evil 2 follows Leon S. Kennedy, a rookie cop, and Claire Redfield, who is searching for her brother, as they arrive in Raccoon City—only to find it overrun by a viral outbreak. As they struggle to survive, they uncover a deeper conspiracy behind the T-Virus and the sinister Umbrella Corporation. The dual campaigns show the story from both perspectives, revealing new details and making the narrative richer and more engaging.
