Be prepared to relive the first nightmare in Resident Evil 0, a remastered version of the popular prequel to the original Resident Evil game.
This remastered version takes the fear-inducing atmosphere from the original 2002 release and transforms it with stunning new HD visuals, improved sound, widescreen support and an optional modernized control system and more. It’s the best way to experience the story of what really happened before the iconic mansion incident that was the catalyst for the entire Resident Evil saga.
The story of Resident Evil 0 takes players back to 1998. Reports have been mounting about unusual murders on the outskirts of Raccoon City. The city’s Special Forces division, S.T.A.R.S., sends their Bravo Team - including rookie cop member Rebecca Chambers - to investigate. On route, the team’s helicopter suffers engine trouble and is forced to make a crash landing, where they find an overturned prisoner transport vehicle. Splitting up to search the area, Rebecca discovers the Ecliptic Express, a train stopped dead on the tracks. Inside, she meets death row convict and ex-Navy lieutenant Billy Coen. Throughout the game, you will take control of both Rebecca and Billy, at times switching between both characters in order to proceed. Learning the advantages of each character is the key to solving puzzles and surviving the nightmares that lie ahead.

A lot working against it
I've been on a classic Resident Evil marathon. RE:Z is the last one in line, and the least enjoyable so far. - Being forced to run two characters simultaneously was entirely unnecessary. - Not having a storage box is incredibly annoying. - Too many animals. - The values of the static camera perspective is to create atmosphere and uncertainty while simultaneously helping the player focus on what is important. I think this game comes up short on both fronts, as though someone didn't understand how maximize the static camera's potential. - Billy is not even remotely interesting. - Rebecca's experiences from RE:Z creates dissonance with her behavior from the original game. But underneath all the bad design choices, there is still a solid Resident Evil game to be found. I can forgive all of these issues as long as I look at the game as both an optional lore supplement and a colletion of experimental game merchanis rather than the natural evolution of the series. Still, I think I'll be glad when I'm done because I'll never have to play it ever again.

solid port of a divisive RE title
Let's get one thing out of the way: this game is unforgiving--even for Resident Evil veterans. Some enemy encounters are flat-out unbalanced like the leaping Eliminator monkeys that chain stagger you and punish any mistake with absurd speed; there's also the leech monster which will damage you no matter how accurate your movements and powerful your weapons are. Ammo is scarce even on lower difficulties. Even more questionably, there is no item box system; instead, you're expected to drop items on the floor and to remember where you left them. The partner system was an ambitious idea that didn't land; having two characters at once means you'll be micromanaging often, and what makes it stranger is that large portions of the game force Rebecca and Billy to split up anyway, which leaves me wondering why Capcom didn't simply follow RE1/RE2 structure of split campaigns instead. Then there's the different portrayals of Rebecca between RE0 and RE1. But for all its frustrations, it delivers as a traditional RE experience. In fact, when it settles into its atmosphere, it reminds you why the classic era is so beloved. Just like the crown jewel of all remakes (RE1 Remake), the pre-rendered backgrounds here remain gorgeous, dripping with mood and tone that not even the most recent remakes have been able to capture. The sound design is equally strong, reminiscent of every classic RE game. The Ecliptic Express section is still in my top three openings of all time. Rebecca and Billy have a genuinely good dynamic. And with this being an RE title, it has the obligatory lab sections. I rate it 4 stars because I revisit the game about once a year, so I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it. I love the challenge, and if you're an RE fan who wants higher difficulties out of an RE game, this is the game for you. It's tragic that the classic era ended on such a messy note with this title being the last entry into that. But there is a reason Capcom keeps this title alive by porting it onto every platform along with RE1 Remake, whereas many, many others are forgotten--because it's still worthy of being counted among the mainline titles. Despite its missteps, RE0 embodies the DNA of classic RE, like meticulous pacing, oppressive tension, puzzle-solving, survival-horror mechanics, and a strange mix of camp and terror. It earns its place in that lineage.

One of the weakest Resident Evil games
I'm glad to see this game on GOG, even if it's one of the weakest entries in the entire series. GOG's version runs perfectly. This HD version, which I'd never played before, still has a very nice presentation by modern standards. I'll try and summarize the many problems I have with this game. - Poor static camera angles. It always looks very cinematic, but it's usually difficult to see enemies and engage them properly. - Extremely annoying inventory management, probably the worst in the entire series. - The two character system feels like a gimmick and wasn't implemented well. - The controls, both the classic and modern settings, are awful and you can't customize them properly. - Combat feels worse than other classic RE games. There isn't much feedback from enemies when they are hit by a weapon. The animations are stiff, slow and characters are locked into them. This makes it easy to get stun locked to death or at the very least lose way more health than you should when fighting enemies. The story and lore are decent enough that it's probably worth playing just once for a fan of the series.
