Terror done right!
It is very difficult to place a real reason why I love this version over the remakes. While the remakes were good and polished and added a lot of extra stuff something about this version still remains more terrifying then the modern games. I forgot how little ammo there was in the original where it makes it near impossible to clear out all enemies. In fact I would say maybe 60 to 70% of enemies can be killed but you will run out of ammo doing it. This is not the case in modern version where ammo always seems plentiful. While the low bag space on Chris is really diffcult to deal with it forces you to make choices on what you can and cannot take with you as you explore. Just feels more dangerous overall and I am loving it. Ink ribbons feel less available when you are on your first playthrough if you don't recall the game well so I have always been on the edge of having no ink ribbon to use after a long segment of exploring and getting items. In fact my best time was knowing I just used my last ink ribbon and had a boss coming up (Snake) while knowing I still would have to continue exploring to find more. Well over an hour of playing without finding one; almost dying to a huge spider (2nd boss encounter after the Snake); narrowly making it to the save room where I was steps away from dying from poison and the relief of finding a blue herb and ink ribbon in that room was something else. lol The acting is so campy; I mean I can still say the new ones have some campyness to it but they do not hold a candle to this one and it is just amusing to see how B-Rated this horror game really went for in development! lol In some ways there are game idea's here that really make it more intense than the new ones which I would love Capcom to revisit some of the idea's here but in modern games. Just more intensity with less ammo would be a great start! Though I suppose those might be the hard modes that do that. Brilliant first Resident Evil game and is still worth the play!
