Your Special Tactics and Rescue Squad has been choppered to a remote mansion to investigate a biotechnical experiment gone hideously wrong. Before you can say "mass murder," you're plunged straight into a deathtrap writhing with man-eating freaks, swarming crows and rabid dogs.
Arm yourself with knives and flame-throwers scavenged from dead teammates. Solve puzzles, disarm traps and unearth mysteries. But beware: every move you make draws you deeper into the deadly embrace of Resident Evil™.

For me on my first time running this version the game starts up and runs fine EXCEPT the character select keeps spinning indefinitely whether I have a controller plugged in or not and when finally in the game it controls fine .... again EXCEPT I can't access the character inventory. I've tried everything. Rebinding both koyeboard and controller, trying different keyboards and controllers, etc. Everytime I press the Sub Menu/Inventory button it takes me to the rebind options page instead. Essentially making the game unplayable.
If anyone knows of a fix for this I'd love to hear it.
I would like to start this review by saying that Resident Evil is one of my favorite sagas. The first installment is not only my favorite one of the saga, but also my favorite game. Also, I want to say that this is my first review on GOG. And honestly, it's the first game I have refunded here.
I was very excited when the GOG team (thank you so much, sincerely) sent me an email to tell me that they had re-released the 1996 title on their platform. In my mind, this was the definitive edition of a great game, but I was wrong. I'm not going to talk about the game itself, because I think we all know it. If that's not the case, you should know that it's one of the great gems of the videogames and it's the father (not the grandfather, that's Alone in the Dark) from the Survival Horror genre. The things that seemed unfortunate to me are the following:
- Poor quality videos, both in frames and resolution. It's something that was present in the PC version of 1996, but it is something that can easily be corrected.
- The soundtrack has a lot of white noise and is VERY annoying.
- The game runs a little fast, but it speeds up much more at random times and happens frequently at many loading times. This makes it frustrating.
- This is less criticizable, but it does not bring any of the additional content of the director's cut. Neither the difficulty levels, nor extra clothes or the Sega Saturn battle mode. These are things that were not released in the PC version, yes, but since they are relaunching the product it would have been an added value for fans.
I'm going to wait to see if they solve any of the problems before buying the game again. For the price it has, it is very cheap, but I find it sad that they have not dedicated the time necesary to polishing small aspects and even more so knowing that they have managed to fix the most difficult thing and that is to make it compatible with modern PCs.
It is very good that the graphics are the originals and it is the original version (although I would prefer that they had improved the textures, graphics and placed videos with better resolution), but please add a translation into Spanish, they already exist Spanish translations.
The game works just fine, but that's pretty much it you know?
No achievements
Nothing really new was added
It's just good old RE, is that a problem? HELL NO
but it could've been better...
Thanks GOG, capcom couldn't care less about this one
