In Red Faction, you play Parker, a weary miner who works for the corrupt Ultor Corporation. You reside on Mars, sometime in the future, and when a plague spreads through the mining community, some of the Ultor employees uncover a massive conspiracy. Thus ensues a battle by a group of lowly workers, headed up by the educated Parker, to expose the deadly experiments Ultor has unleashed onto its work force.
Red Faction was a very big leap forward in the FPS genre. It introduced many new technical features such as location-based damage system, real-time skeletal deformation, advanced physics simulation, destructible environment and more. The unprecedented (at the time) interaction with the environment creates a very strong feeling of immersion that is very impressive even by today's standards.
Unique set of features such as location-based damage system, real-time skeletal deformation, advanced physics simulation, and destructible environment.
An ability to use land, sea, and air vehicles during your missions.
Compelling storyline (written by the creators of the famous FreeSpace series) that will keep you hooked for many hours.

This could have been so much fun: I really enjoyed the quick and simple shooting and I'll always hold these 90s/00s graphics and AI very dear, but in 2 hours of playing ive had multiple problems: workarounds, stuck in assets, doors that should open did not open (which is fine only when you have explosives, which at one point I did not) and now i have the explosive submarine bug...... I'm done
This is a great game overall. The graphics look like poop compared to anything recent. Even when it was released it didn't look great.
The physics are fun. You can keep blowing huge chunks of the wall away until you discover hidden ares and items. Rigging explosives on bridges and waiting for enemies to cross was one of my favorite parts.
The final boss battle is epic. It took me a few tries to even beat it. Once you do beat the game you can go on to the multiplayer part of the game, which is pretty good even now. You can collapse sections of the level on your enemies for kills, and the weapons are fairly balanced.
Overall and awesome game with decent replayability. Lots of crazy antics to get into when you're bored. The enemies are halfway between frustrating as hell, and mildly retarded, and bosses are somewhat challenging. This game is well worth the money in my opinion.
You would be surprised - after all these years! Look, the game was published in 2001, and now 14 years later there is still faithful community which still releases its own patches (!) and you will always find someone to play with. Fantastic.
After downloading it from gog be sure to go to www.purefaction.org to download community patch. Then have fun!!!
I see many nostalgia driven reviews which praise this game here so I feel the following needs to be said: this game is full of glitches and flaws. Let me explain.
First of all, Red Faction was released after games like Deus Ex or Thief and it lacks a lot of stuff that was introduced into gaming by those games, like side dialogues, interacting with NPCs etc. Sure, you get the Geo-Mod which is pretty cool, but the rest of the physics feels way too old than it should. I got stuck between two objects a couple of times and ugh, that mission with driving a jeep... it's just horrible. Also, you can't move any crates or basically anything around and the NPCs in game are awfully stupid. Dialogues and responses are repetitive ("I'm on your side!" says the guy who just called the guards to kill me). The stealth mission is disappointing at best, especially compared to the above mentioned classics. The scripting is also a bit stupid: most events are triggered by walking into a given area which in consequence cause a couple of silly dialogues. Oh, and the plot is centralised around nano-engineered plague and evil corporation. Sounds familiar?
Ok, enough ranting. To make it short: I think the creators of RF wanted to achieve too much at a one time: if this was just a generic FPS but with vehicles and Geo-Mod, I wouldn't have anything against it. But after playing Deus Ex, Thief, Unreal, System Shock 2 and others... RF feels like a rushed rip off. There, I said it. Sorry, die-hard fans.
Its your normal shooter, with the ability to go through SOME walls, it may not seem much now but was very innovative back in the day. the pacing is all over the place, starting with some great levels, then forcing some stealth on you, then some corridors, then a vehicle section, then something great again.
However its a fun ride if you take the time to appreciate its age
Its also still the best game in the series.
