Recursive Ruin Demo is available here

Recursive Ruin is a kaleidoscopic first-person narrative puzzle game.

Manipulate an infinitely recursive landscape to solve a series of environmental puzzles as you work through your own struggles with grief and a creative crisis.

With Behemoth, The Cat at your side — or at least somewhere nearby — unlock an introspective journey through your past and discover new meaning in a chaotic world.

A Dying, Visually Stunning World
Lose yourself in the Infinite Realms, a dying, fractal world of strange beauty and mind-bending physics that repeats eternally inward and outward. Uncover the secrets of seven hypnotizing landscapes filled with hidden spaces and bizarre celestial denizens. Overcome the impossible and use circular logic to manipulate recursive physics and solve challenging, self-referential puzzles.

A Deeply Personal Journey
Begin an introspective search for meaning and experience a bittersweet story that cascades into the surreal. Use your unique abilities and shape the world to beat back the scourge known as Ichor, a malevolent substance eating away at the fabric of reality.

Rediscover Meaning, and Hope
Through the fight against the Ichor, and the satisfying completion of peculiar puzzles, balance out the chaos of the Infinite Realms and reconcile your own inner turmoil.

This is a work of love

This strikes me as a game made by an amateur game designer with a very personal story/game vision and a brilliant software developer inspired to make that dream a reality. There were some rough edges. While the game's tech and level design are amazing, the textures are a bit busy and take away from the readibility of these fascinating environments. The voice actors are fine but sometimes I can tell they weren't given great direction or context for their lines. None of these things are deal breakers. The only thing that really bugged me was that I couldn't identify the narrative solution. A typical story for a hero's journey(or just any protagonist) reaches a climax where the stakes are the highest, the hero is at is lowest point, and then finally a reason for resolution is unveiled and the story concludes. The tension eases and the narrative is at rest. This only works if the victory is earned. If all the horrors just vanish without effort, there was no point to the entire story. It seemed like the game tried to justify the peace found by the protagonist at the end but it wasn't very clear to me. Maybe I just need to rewatch a few of the interactions near the end of the story.

A-maze-ing Game

Are endless mazes your favorite part of adventure games? Then this is surely the game for you. But not for me. My experience was endlessly repeating the following few options: walk, jump, shrink/grow, move the world. Somewhat like a very slow platformer without the platforms. And the world would make Picasso proud. So I wound up wandering in a bizarre world for reasons not made clear. The game is described as "an artist coming to terms with his grief". This review is part of my healing.
