This is a work of love
This strikes me as a game made by an amateur game designer with a very personal story/game vision and a brilliant software developer inspired to make that dream a reality. There were some rough edges. While the game's tech and level design are amazing, the textures are a bit busy and take away from the readibility of these fascinating environments. The voice actors are fine but sometimes I can tell they weren't given great direction or context for their lines. None of these things are deal breakers. The only thing that really bugged me was that I couldn't identify the narrative solution. A typical story for a hero's journey(or just any protagonist) reaches a climax where the stakes are the highest, the hero is at is lowest point, and then finally a reason for resolution is unveiled and the story concludes. The tension eases and the narrative is at rest. This only works if the victory is earned. If all the horrors just vanish without effort, there was no point to the entire story. It seemed like the game tried to justify the peace found by the protagonist at the end but it wasn't very clear to me. Maybe I just need to rewatch a few of the interactions near the end of the story.
