Just not as fun
I bought this on Epic when it was still an exclusive. It's got all the right bits but it's just not as fun as Rebel Galaxy. It's also grindier than a gacha game. It's like the grind that would have been ok in 1992 when there was only a couple games available and you had all the time in the world but things are different now. I don't even mind grind, I mean the first one had a bit of the old grindage... but the prize was in reach, you could see it. If you enjoy looking at a huge target reticule and firing stuff at it because the game says there is an enemy there, then the combat is for you. I love arcade dogfighting but it's nice to be able to actually see what you're shooting at once in a while. Get in close and take the shot. Never gonna happen in this game, or it might, but the grind to get a ship that can do it is like a mountain. The pool simulation is pretty good. The music is great. I really loved the first one and I really wanted to love this. Also I just cant fathom shield management in a high tech space fairing civilisation, it's daft, stop it.

Somehow Worse...
After playing the 1st Rebel Galaxy and enjoying it, bar the difficulty ramp at the end game, I was looking forward to this title. Boy was I wrong, the game is worse in almost every way, it seems that the devs took the feedback from the last game, and doubled down on every negative aspect. The UI is bad, information is hidden or not available, the 3d radar is useless, the starting ship is paper. The camera is now fixed, except when jumping, and if you like the external view its far too close to the ship making figuring out where youre being shot from next to impossible. There is a story, but it doesnt tell you if its prior to the 1st game or after, I assumed prior due to the characters age but I could be wrong. In fact it doesnt tell you much at all. At £4 it might be worth a try, but there is a reason most youtubers stopped this after 1-2 videos. Its just not a good game.

Freelancer's underachieving succesor
Space exploration sim, not as involved or huge as Elite Dangerous, but it sits closer to the classic Freelancer, + A good amount of star systems to explore + get into dogfightsor haul cargo around if you feel like it, cooperate with the authorities or become a space pirate. + you can customize several aspects of the power output on the fly to adapt to the situation + The fact you can choose a custom music folder to use as a radio station inside the game was a nice touch. But not all is good, - there's no personal hangar so no option of having different ships for different situations, - ship selection is very limited and you cannot customize different parts, just upgrade the shileds hull and cargo depending on the base capabilities of the ship - there's no way to customize the way you group up weapons, you either use one or all at any given time (you can technically use 2 weapons at the same time if you equip the same weapon in 2 different slots, but that sucks big time) - Mining is poorly implemented, first you have to use a mining laser that takes one weapon slot, and it drains energy very fast whcih make it impossible to use in combat , specially if you want to use the "all weapons" setup mentioned before, and that's why I abandoned mining half way throw the game - The story is nothing to write home about, and mid game those story missions get pretty spicy, throwing you into 1v8 fights (whcih wouldn't be so bad if you could have several ships for every situation Honestly, I had fun with it, but I felt like it didn't reach the same heights of Freelancer, it improves in some aspects, but it doesn't in other, game crashed several times while fast traveling too. Get in on discount if you are curious about it

Fizzles
I don't write many reviews nowadays as I want to hit the right note, and I often fail. This game gives me precisely this feeling, and this is why I felt I needed to write this review. This game consists of two parts: a space exploration and trade game like Elite, and an RPG. This combination can be potent, but it doesn't work in this game. Let's get the role-play element out of the way first, as it is the weakest part. The story's lead, Juno, is on a quest to find out who killed her husband). The crucial question is: Why should I care? And the answer for this game is: I don't. I don't know the husband, so I cannot relate to him. This isn't helped by Juno, a jaded, cynical person, showing zero emotion towards her deceased husband or anything else. Contrast this with a game like Venetica, in which Scarlett's companion is killed, and she goes on the same quest as Juno. While we don't know her partner, the game introduces us to emotional scenes, and Scarlett is just a much nicer person than Juno and is emotionally affected. The idea was that Juno was a kind of Han Solo character, but they forgot that Han Solo is a side character that only functions as a counterpoint to Luke and Lea. In other words, the RPG part is uninteresting, and I lost interest. The other part is the space exploration and trading game, and this is half-baked. Pivotal to space exploration and trading is finding new places that offer new sights and opportunities. There is nothing in this game. If they had tied the story and space element together and made Juno likable, I am sure the game would have been better. As it stands, the game is okay for a while, but it is also a missed opportunity.
