Description
Lead your people to glory and write a new chapter of history in Realpolitiks II, a real-time grand strategy game where you lead any contemporary nation in an attempt to secure world dominance. The road to supremacy is filled with modern world issues as you manage your nation’s economy, command armies, conduct diplomatic and espionage actions, and tackle global threats such as terrorism, pandemics, famine, and more.
Realpolitiks II delivers a whole new economic system which gives you more control of your country than ever before. Construct new buildings, dictate trading policy, and use your advisors’ special abilities to further improve, or hinder, the life of your citizens. Transition from democracy to totalitarianism too quickly and you might have a rebellion on your hands.
Bring your units to battle in a completely new combat system which gives you complete control over every battlefield. Command your units and develop your general’s skills to acquire new tactical opportunities on land, sea, and air. Plan your war strategy carefully, weather, terrain, unit formation, equipment, and much more must all be taken into account to ensure a decisive victory.
Diplomacy has been revitalized with a whole new set of diplomatic actions such as non-aggression and defensive pacts, military access, trade agreements, and advanced peace negotiations. Espionage is now deeper with a wide range of spying activities; level up your spies and develop their subterfuge skills to create more chaos in the enemy’s ranks or deceive your own people. Choose your approach and dominate the world.

IMPORTANT:
Tutorial scenario for Realpolitiks II is currently in ENGLISH ONLY! Since the game is in Early Access, we wanted to use this opportunity to tweak and polish our tutorial scenario in accordance to the community feedback. For this reason, tutorial scenario will be translated into other languages once all of its contents are in place, as it would be too complicated to handle multiple languages at once. Thank you for your understanding!
I played Realpolitiks 1 and its addon a lot. I have several hundred hours on my counter... so I eagerly looked forward to Part 2.
Sadly it seems like the Developer has dropped the ball on this game, development is very very slow or stopped. People are asking in the steam discussion section already if the game is dead. If I would have seen this earlier I would not have bought the game.
So whats in the game right now? 3 Scenarios... 2 are similiar where you have the world in 2020 before Covid or 2021 with Covid... the third scenario sounded interesting its basically a wasteland USA scenario after a WW3 with nukes. Sadly that third scenario is so poor done, for example you cant do ANY research, you just build warriors and hope to have more than other factions have and steamroll them... thats it, no big strategy involved as you cant do that much else. Better get Hearts of Iron 4 and play the Fallout Mod, for any Grand Strategy Wasteland itch you might have its a much better choice.
Also institutions like the EU or NATO or CSTO are completly missing (I am talking about the 2020 and 2021 Scenarios here of course)... so the big nations can steamroll a lot before their warmonger score goes high enough before other nations would get their ass up and do something (if at all). By leaving out core Institutions of our real world, this game is even more unrealistic and sadly also dull as already big nations will steamroll all the time. There are quite some games out there that simulate the modern world better and you can do more as a player to influence that world in those games (which makes them more interesting). Take for example Hearts of Iron 4 with the Modern Day mod... you can do a lot more in that mod, than in this whole game. Or even take older Titles like all of the Supreme Ruler games, they are more interesting because you can do more interesting stuff.
There is more wrong with the game, but I am reaching the lenght-limit of the review.
General idea of this game is brilliant. You are presented with current geopolitical situation and take control of a existing country. You need to deal with its parliament, army, research, economy, etc.
But, as of version 1.08, it is plagued with many bugs. For example in-game music stops playing after you play for some time, and you have to listen to the soundtrack files included in more expensive Deluxe Edition (wav and mp3), if you wan to have full game experience. List of major bugs (there are more smaller ones) that I found is located here https://www.gog.com/forum/realpolitiks/realpolitiks_ii_bugs_no_sound_in_intro_background_music_stops_playing_time_is_not_advancing_scro
Nevertheless, I was able to finish campaigns that I started, and the game was quite enjoyable. It was able to cause One More Turn Syndrome. World map is accurate, you can find Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics there. During the game Russia likes to invade Ukraine with its army. Loading screen presents you with quotes from various leaders, dictators and thinkers that fit perfectly with the game.
The rules of the game are however not terribly realistic. At the start of the main campaign, there are no alliances between countries (or maybe its is ultra-realistic, and it reflecting the truth of worthlessness of international agreements, for example Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal to Russia in exchange for Russia refraining from using force against Ukraine, look how it turned up). As your country expands its economy and territory, costs of buildings and projects can skyrocket, which means that developing space technologies required to achieve science victory can cost almost infinite amount of resources when you play a powerful country (because rocket able to put 100 tons into LEO build by Monaco requires 2000 tons of propellant and the one build by China requires 6000000 tons, right?). I hope that in Realpolitiks III we will get something better and more adequately representing reality.
I would give 2,5 Stars, cause this game definitively has potential. Unfortunatelly it does not deliver on that.
In short: All you have to do is crunching your numbers up. Action Points are completely off-balanced, you will literally run out of time before you run out of Action Points. After a while (or by powergaming some mechanics) Money will come to you easily too. There are no setbacks or independencies, where you have to decide, what to prioritize: AP, Money, Natural Resources.
Diplomacy might look fun, but even for local powers war brings you way faster to your goals, especially the resource-heavy ones. Once you realize, how this game works, all you do is pushing your numbers up through projects and buildings. The Events are merely a funny distraction without any impact.
Even though a lot of this game is explained in tool-tips, some things just leave you wondering. For example, I stopped playing, cause my parliament would not allow one project I need to get to my goal, even though they were lobbied (you just buy them, basically, for a short amount of time). There was no explanation why this specific project was not possible. All other projects, I needed to lobby for, were accepted without problems.
It seems, that this game was rushed and put together without much thought about what players can be offered. It tries to be a combination of Diplomacy and the combat system of Europa Universalis/Hearts of Iron, while lacking massively in both parts.
After two hours of playing tutorial game time froze which stopped by from progressing. Quicks Internet search revealed that this is common bug. Even saving and loading game would not help because loading does not work.
Another problem I have with this game is that I was still in tutorial after two hours of playing. That is bit too heavy. I felt really bored and tired without end in sight.
So good but it feels buggy despite playing on a brand new Macbook Pro. The game has a lot of similarity to EU4, except in modern time. I do wish it was polished more. Great game otherwise.
