Absolutely awesome game!

I'm gonna start out by saying, this game's graphics are dated. But that doesn't stop it from being one of the most epic games I've ever played. First and foremost it's an FPS (First Person Shooter) but the experience is almost like you've walked into the pages of a great mystery/horror novel and are living it. The conversion from FPS to a kinda point-and-click as you play the game makes it not only easy to confront whatever you might run into, but also interact with the environment. Video cut-scenes are tastefully placed and have appropriate lengths for the situations. You'll be fairly shocked at how lengthy the game is. It took me over a month (between school, etc) to get to the end. All in all, a great game and well worth the cost.

flawed but enjoyable

This is basically what you get when you cross a 90s first person shooter with a 90s point-and-click adventure game. Major flaws include obtuse puzzles, terrible AI, a control scheme that requires at least four hands to use effectively, and at least one point where you can render the game unwinnable by accident. On the positive side, I really dig the use of 2D sprites in a 3D setting. I played all the way through and I enjoyed it for the most part, in a B movie sort of way, but even so I can't really call it a good game.

Best Adventure/fps/rpg/action game ever!

My favourite gane ever - one of the most atmospheric and scary games ever, great storytelling, lots of different "worlds" to explore and some great fmv cut scenes to add to the drama

High highs and low lows

If you want an early FPS that doesn't seem like a doom or quake clone, you could do much worse than Realms of the Haunting. A unique setting with a refreshing emphasis on story, character and atmosphere. You have a lot of "find X key for X door" puzzles, but it doesn't become un-fun. Where the game drops the ball somewhat are the maze-like levels, some of which are horribly dark and nigh-impossible to navigate. It was forgivable in doom and heretic when you had levels made entirely of the same few textures, not so much here. Still worth a look.
